My Uni College is giving the resident film club some money to buy equipment.. we already have decent cameras so we were thinking about getting something else. Namely a cheap version of a steadicam, called the Steadicam JR, which is basically a moveable arm that performs the same function as a £4000 proper steadicam kit. Do you know anything about these, or about Glidecams, which apparently are another alternative?

We're probably going to go for a screenless Steadicam, and rely on the flip out screen on the camera, and we get one of those for £469 from www.dvwarehouse.co.uk

The other options are decent audio equipment, which would be great unless your films still look shaky and handheld. Or decent lighting equipment, which would be nice, if not a little impractical because once you start carting lighting equipment round you have to ask filming permission, and we intend to be more guerilla...

So it's basically a choice between the different sorts of camera stabilising systems.

They are very good and especially if you don't have a stedicam of anysort.
I suggest you look around before making your purchase though as prices on the JR's can really vary £600 up and down from the RRP.

Other equipment, I would say look for some decent Canon DV cameras, as I find these to offer the best quality and they also have stabilisers built into them. They work nicely with the JR as well.

Any other questions? I am not sure what you are looking for but having used a JR at a convention I can say they are worth it if you need one.

:)
