Just think about it for a minute, what is the point in games? And I warn you now, this post will confuse you.
It's strange really isn't it. How we surround ourselves in things that aren't real. We are a civilisation obsessed with anything but reality. And then we are surprised when something bad happens in the world and we dont know why, or how to cope because we've never done anything for 'real'. We've never taken the time to learn things that could help us in life, because we've been doing things that dont actually exist. We only know how to fly a plane via a Dual Shock controller. We'll only try self defence if we have 2 continue's left in case we make a mistake. We know that if we flip our Ford Focus on its roof, we'll get another. What can we do? What is real, what isn't?
Just think how much time and money has gone into the games industry in its lifetime, £MILLIONS! And why? to recreate things that we already have. Football, driving, flying, shooting, and countless other pass-times. Admittedly, not everyone can play in the world cup final, Drive a £100,000 car, Fly a Million dollar fighter plane, or walk around with a flame thrower, but you can surely see what im getting at. Money well spent? You tell me, what have we gained from playing videogames? Have we learned anything usefull, or gained any 'real' skills?
You see, again we end up talking about the difference between whats real and what isn't. Why are some things not real? surely they are real in some way, because after all, we have 'done' them. We didn't imagine we completed Jak & Daxter last week, it happened so it must have been real, right? How much of what we see and do do we create ourselves? Take MGS2 for example, there was so much hype and anticipation surrounding it that even if it was rubbish we probably would've told ourselves it was fantastic. So if we had been told nothing, would MGS2 still have been the best game ever? Think about that.
Dont get me wrong, I love games and my life wouldn't be complete without them. It's just I dont know why! It's bizzare, how have they become real? How have they become part of everyones life? Im actually scaring myself now.
Would we ever know if something went from being real, to virtual? Graphics are getting more lifelike by the day, doesn't that scare you? look around you, is all that real, or just something created by a machine?
The point of games then? To become absorbed in a world thats not this one, to get away, to change whats real to YOU. Its up to us to decide what is real and what is virtual. But at what point does something cross the line? Did we do something just then, or just imagine we did?
The explanation is that We DID do things that DIDDN'T actually happen, but they did because we did them, but they diddn't actually happen - Its a never ending circle and we're all trapped in it, forever.
Confused? Then success, this post has affected you. Thats how easy it is to influence the way someone thinks. Scared yet?
> so in actual fact theres no such thing as there not being such a thing, because
> everything is real
Er, that sentence is like knot.
A "thing" is still real even if it only exists in the human imagination.
The truth is all there is, and reality has infinte levels of being.
Scientific facts exist, but they are only 0.1% of the story.
