The XBox had a large range of top quality titles at launch. Although I only have Halo and PGR, Amped, DoA3, JSRF, Rallisport Challenge and Wreckless all look worth getting.
However, was the launch *too* good? Have we got any titles out over the next month or so to really push home how good the XBox is?
This friday sees the release of:
Championship Manager 01/02
Genma Onimusha XB
Simpsons Road Rage XB
Test Drive Off Road: Wide Open
Just 4 titles. 1 of which is available on PC and 2 on PS2.
To be honest, none of these 4 appeal to me. Which could be bad news for MS. A lot of people haven't decided which console to get, waiting for the launch of the GC before they make a decision.
We need to see top quality titles released between now and May, or a lot of people may decide to go for the GC or PS2 instead.
I know that in the long term there are a lot of good games out for the XBox. Gun Valkyrie and Crazy Taxi 3 are both titles I'm looking forward to, along with a number or others. But they're not due out for a few months yet, and will probably get delayed, as all games do.
Should Microsoft have arranged the launch of the titles so we got a few each week? Or is it good that they all came at once?
Thoughts?
PS2 launch - no games were released until after Christmas
GBA launch - none were released until the end of the summer holidays.
The Xbox has a steady stream of games coming in, and even if they are on the PS2 and PC, it doesn't mean people won't buy them. Just because Tony Hawks 2 is on the PlayStation, doesn't mean you won't buy it on the N64 if you have an N64 and not a PlayStation.
I recall keeping an eye on the market when the PS2 came out and the first few months looked terrible - certainly bad enough to keep me away. Less than a year later, you can get pretty much anything you want on the platform. I got a look at the release schedules for the Xbox while I was humming and hawing about buying in, and I'm confident it'll go the same way.
Apparently the UK policy is to release at least 2 games a week for the forseeable future - okay a number of them are bound to be shovel jobs, but I'm all in favour of backwards compatibility. MS is walking softly and carrying a big stick, I feel. If it works, this should give them good market penetration almost without anyone noticing. This approach makes sense, really, given that they're playing catchup on nextgen market share and sales momentum is the name of the game.
The main worry really is that Xbox won't reach critical mass - ie, the point where it would be seriously unprofitable for developers to avoid the format. There can't be too much doubt that the Xbox is the best currently available technology, however, as we who bought Betamax know, the best doesn't always live long enough to win.
YH, I suggest you ask to see the release diary in any branch of Game. Obviously the schedule isn't set in stone, but it's still good therapy for the early-adopter blues.

I'm enjoying Halo - the ability to use cover, outflank, cooperate et al against an enemy force that does the same. Its beautiful to look at, well-paced and very absorbing. Overall, its my favourite FPS and I've played most of them from Wolfenstein up. But I find PGR a bit dull really - once over the lovely pseudo-realism, there's not much joy in shaving seconds off laptimes, however classily (Klassily?) you do it. But hey, that's a personal preference.
So PGR is going back for swap this lunchtime. Still undecided what to pick up in its place. I'm tempted by DOA, although the reviews seem to indicate that it's short on stamina so I may exercise some self-control and wait for SC2.

But having said that: there is no doubt that the games that are available now are top class, and they would certainly keep me busy for a long, long time.
JSRF
Halo
Wreckless
PGR
DOA3
and more.....
Hours of gameplay to fill the inevitable after launch barren spell.
"Galleon" looks good and should be out soon.
Buffy was going to be out on 19th April, but seems to be delayed. This would have been good, as I would have finished all of my 4 Xbox games fully and would have a new game.
Another game is Gun Valkyrie, its just come out in the States and should be out May/June.
Really there arent any new releases that are out in the next month or 2 that I actually want. I may turn to picking up some launch titles that I didnt get. Maybe Amped or Wreckless. Actually my mate has Amped and thought he would like it but he doesnt. Hopefully I could buy it off him on the cheap.
Perhaps MS should have spaced out the launch titles a bit, meaning that at least 1 worthy game to be in your collection is released each week. But it makes sence that, if the games are ready, they should be put on the shelves as soon as possible.
I understand your concern that as Xbox has some of the best games in certain genres (ie Halo, DOA3, PGR) the next games to be released will have a hard act to follow. Xbox owner will have all played some great games, and the ones to follow, instead of getting better, are lowering in quality.
We will have to wait an see how the release dates pan out.
