MGS you had the torture sequence (repeated in 2), you had the bit where you needed to take the controller out and put it into port 2 so that the boss couldn't predict your movements, you had to search for the CODEC code, only to discover it was on the box as a screenshot.
Just little touches that made MGS stand-out.
Whilst MGS2 has excellent graphics, it's a standard sneak-em-up with nothing (apart from MGS) to make it stand out.
Don't get me wrong, it's a good game but it just seems to have left out all the clever/inventive bits from the 1st game.
And loads of bits are exactly the same with 1 or 2 minor changes.
Chopper battle becomes Harrier battle
Sniper Wolf showdown becomes Vamp showdown
The only part that seemed to approach the originality of the 1st one was the swimming-through-flooded-levels.
Because it was something we haven't seen before in that game.
MGS broke out of what a game could offer, but sadly it feels to me that MGS2 is just more of the same.
It doesn't have that factor of "Cool!",I just thought "Yeah ok, so tranq that gaurd and sneak past. Repeat. Oh good, another cut-scene and CODEC moment."
It's not a bad game, just unoriginal and more of the same.
MGS2 just had the two levels, although the tanker had the corridors, rooms and holds, and the plant just had struts and bridges, but I felt it wasn't really enough. Arsenal Gear and New York just seemed 'tacked on' at the end for variety's sake.
MGS2's only mad sections were the ninja guards in Arsenal Gear where you went co-op mode with Snake, but on the other hand if you wanted madness you just had to initiate a clearance sequence on any of the levels for a bit of fun.
MGS1 always had the upper hand because it was 100% originality all the way. MGS2 is more of the same, but done better. What it lacked in original features it made up for in some great gameplay.
If I had to pick just one of the two I'd go for MGS2, because there's a lot more to do. (Those dogtags are going to keep me busy for months).
As for the game play...that speaks for itself.
Not one cut scene in MGS2 comes close to Sniper Wolf's Death scene!
