March 8th 2002 will go down in the histroy books. Why ? For Metal Gear Solid 2 ? Unfortunately not, though that could have been the last game any of us ever played.....

March 8th, and in the cold dark of space Asteroid 2002 EM7 passed within 288 000 miles of earth. Sounds a big distance doesn't it ? Well it isn't much further than the moon and we can see that every night can't we !

Ah, we're all still here you're thinking, whats the point....Scientists did not know it had even passed until 4 days later on March 12th....no warning whatsoever.

Its rather disquietening to think that science isn't quite as fallible as we'd like to think it is. How many of us watched Armagedddon last tuesday and laughed at it, "it'll never happen", well it nearly did and unlike the film there is nothing we could have done, no last minute attempt, no brave heroes blasting off to save us all. Just Armgageddon. If this asteroid had even clipped the earth's atmosphere it would have exploded like a 4 megaton nuclear weapon and vapourised anything below it for miles.

Even with warning, NASA's emergency launch programme can only launch in 12 hours time 1 shuttle team. The Russian space agency could maybe get a team together in a similar time, but what would they do ? There is no known way of stopping an asteroid thats worked, but we haven't tried.

Maybe it might be time to start considering that, because I don't think we get a second chance at this !

That's rather disturbing.

18 days ago, the world could have 'ended'.

Christ. Makes you think. I could have died without ever doing anything worthwhile.
