PS2 has gathered a big enough fan base so far in the Gaming Market, and the PC is still going strong despite its age, and is still churning out quality games, which leaves Microsoft to fight it out with Nintendo this Christmas. Well, if you've been keeping up with the gaming news in the last few weeks then you'll have noticed that Microsoft have put a new and even lower deal on the X-Box, allowing it to be sold for £154.99 with 2 controllers and 2 games. This is surely a great selling scheme, and even though Nintendo have the GC at a fairly low price, in my opinion, they could just make it a little lower - which could affect the sales a lot.

Many of you will disagree that the GC needs a price cut, but I'll stand by that statement - Microsoft X-Box and Nintendo GameCube were released at nearly the same time, and since then, Microsoft have cut their console down to half the money it was on release date, and Nintendo have done naff all in the ways of price cuts. Sure, this proves that Nintendo are confident with the way the GC is doing in the market, and they don't feel that they need a price cut, and it also proves that Microsft aren't too happy with the way things are going, but I still think that Nintendo will need to make a move soon, or they could lose quite a lot of sales to the 'now cheaper when you buy with games and peripherals - X-Box'.

So far:
~PS2 - Got enough sales after various different price cuts and special offers - just needs its games to sell well now.
~GBA - Doing very well indeed - good price now and plenty of quality games to play.
~X-Box - Not doing too well at all - needing all these price cuts to ensure it makes even a few sales. I think these price cuts will help it a lot over the Christmas period.
~GC - Ninty have done naff all so far with the GC except release it at a fairly good price. Although it still costs less than the X-Box and PS2, I feel a price drop is in order just to get those extra few sales.

Many PS2 owners that weren't too keen on the GC before would possibly buy one if the price went down a little more, and many would buy it over the X-Box when they'd originally thought they'd've been getting an X-Box. Ok, so I couldn't really care any more because I have a GC now, but c'mon Ninty, give us a price cut, it WOULD help you know.

Of course their games are a huge selling point, but OUR point is that people will take the consoles at face value. Look at it this way:

PS2 - 'Cool' console. All my mates have one. Impressive back catalogue of games. GTA series. Can play DVDs. Good potential.

X-Box - 'Hardcore' console. Can play DVDs. Halo. Good potential. Best value - 2 Games Inclusive.

GC - 'Original' console. Mario Sunshine. Good potential. Cheapest (but not best value).

If Nintendo don't have much if a selling point (games wise) I'd hate to think how low Microsoft's is.

The point is, there are still thousands upon thousands of kids who want a Gamecube, and Mario Sunshine. But generally kids don't have £130, so, guess what?

Thats right, their parents will buy them a GC and Sunshine for christmas!!

Ta da. Increased sales.

Mario Sunshine will still be selling consoles at Christmas. And so will Starfox, thats a big franchise too remember.

The X-Box is cheaper than the Cube at the moment, as you get 2 free games with it. Nintendo need to do something to help boost sales!

NGC said they have recieved a Nintendo statement saying they arne't cutting the price (that was two months ago), but went on to say:

"we beleive a Gamecube price cut will be in place before the Christmas console season. At the time of writing, a Japanese machine costs the equivalent of £106 - we'd be very surprised if the UK price doesn't dip below £100 within the next couple of months"

At the moment Nintendo are counting on their games to sell units. There was a huge increase in sales when Mario Sunshine was released, and Metroid Prime and Zelda will undoubtably have the same effect. It's just a shame Metroid won't make it in time for Christmas in the UK.

Whitestripes - the point is this. Excluding Super Mario Sunshine (the next installment in a huge franchise), Nintendo don't really have much of a selling point over the Christmas period. Sure, the GameCube is a great price, but it's going to take more than that to wow the consumers before Christmas.

The PS2 has the cool image, plus a huge back catalogue of games. The X-Box is now displaying great value for money, and with the new bundle, people are going to think 'Great price! Let's get that one!'. Without a big announcement, price drop or new console/games/peripherals bundle, it's going to be hard to hold onto the Christmas sales this year.

Thats because Microsoft are capitalism in it's purest form. They have more money than they know what to do with. They could afford to sell the X-box for £50.

Nintendo can't afford to to bundle the GC with another controller and two games for free.

If the X-box had sold 10 million units in two weeks, do you think they would have lowered the price even once by now? I certianly don't think they would have.

They've only lowered the price because they're desperate. And why should they're desperation cost Nintendo more money then they can afford?

Let me check something anyway, they may be a price cut soon...

Not at all, I'm going by the assumption the games companies like to compete, and therefore, Nintendo should try and compete. Microsoft have done their bit - you can get an X-Box with 2 games and 2 controllers cheaper than you can get a GC with 2 games and 2 controllers.

Yes, they're losing money from the console, but think of all the games and all the peripherals that are selling worldwide to make up for that.

You seem to be going by the assumption that all consoles should have a price cut six months after they are relesed.

The GC was *released* at a cut price, and now you expect more? They were losing a shed load of money from the £130 release price.

It it had been released at £50 would you be expecting them to drop it too £25 now? Even though it costs £200 to make?
