Is Metal Gear Solid any fun or is it just a pain in the a**e? Is it worth getting it just to get stuck on the first level (unless your a gaming pro it will be hard and stressful.

There are several difficulty modes, from Very Easy, to European Extream (available when you have already completed the game once on any difficulty). So however good you are at it, your needs should be catered for it.
I havn't heard of anyone who found it too difficult to complete.
