I was thinking for a bit there, as I tend to do from time to time. Usually boring things happen but just there I thought of something concerning us all. Please read if you have the chance, I apologise if it is pants but it is just one of those spur of the moment things. Can you or I change things? We all know the names of people who have brought something special, maybe Shigeru Miyamoto or Hideo Kojima, they have brought something wonderful and special to the gaming industry and have achieved so much and that is why do many of us know who they are and most probably admire there work.

So what I was thinking was this. Do any of us have the ability to achieve something similar in the gaming industry? Can we change the industry like others have? In a way I think some of us probably can, we all have our own ideas and some of them could well be ideas that have the ability to bring something new and fresh to the industry, something that gaming fans will love. So my advice to any of you who want to achieve something like this is work on your idea, work hard to succeed and remember to take the gamers point of view.
Another little point for those who want to get into games development, well those who want to program games anyway. Don't do it for the money, because you don't get paid that great, well knowhere near what other companies pay for the same kind of skills.

But on the other side of it all I also think that the industry these days is moving away from outstanding achievement and ideas from the likes of Miyamoto, not because people don't have the ideas but because of a few other points. Firstly money, there is a lot of money to risk on new ideas, sure if they are popular they will sell well but many developers wont take the risk if they are unsure of success as there is too much money to be lost. This also brings us on to the idea of originality ,( I won't go on about this too much as we have all heard the main points and also if this gets too long nobody will read it. )
Originality plays a big part here, a lot of the succesful ideas have already been used and many games are just similar to others with some improvements. This also means that there may not be many new original ideas that are capable (maybe due to technology) at this present time. There is also the point that those of us who have quite good ideas may never get anywhere in the industry to get ideas that become reality. Which brings me on to my last point.

I think more should be done by developers/publishers to get more information from gamers, maybe on-line gaming will increase this but I just think that developers and the standard of games will increase if they concentrated more on what gamers want and the gamers ideas.

So I guess my questions to you are these: Do you have any ideas that you think could change gaming? Will you share them with us? Out of all the developers which single person do you think has brought the most to gaming?

The hype surrounding the XBox was created completely artificially, around screenshots and FMV's. This will not fool most intelligent gamers, but the "trendy" ones who just want to show off will buy one because of that(And the high price tag). By the time XBox hype had infiltrated into most gamers, how many of them had actually played it? If they had the chance to play it then, then they may have noticed the generic gameplay, albeit coupled with great graphics.

MGS2 however was kept like its predecesor, and so we knew what the benchmark was, what we was expecting, and we were not constantly having the fact that it was the greatest thing in the world, ever, rammed downed our throats by every "I got my daddy to import me my copy six months ago type" around, as they were to busy trying to pursuade the check-in clerk in a japanese airport that the XBox would not be overweight to carry on board, or to be dangerous if it fell on someones head.

Even cuddly Sony are guilty of PR. The whole reason we got MGS2 so late was to distract attention from the European release of the XBox. Not so much a triumph of gameplay over hype, as a triumph of one marketing team over another. And who lost out the most? We did!

It is a shame that discerning gamers can make little difference in the gaming world. The XBox is a prime example of this.

Microsoft make a new powerful console, that fact is undeniable.
Unfortunately, all the games publishers program all their games around the Geforce 3 graphics card and little else. There was a lot of hype surrounding games like Halo, Munches Oddysee etc. but when it comes to playing the games, it becomes very apparent that the games are little more generic copies of PSOne,N64 and DC games.

It is the gamers that are easily influenced that have the power in the games industry. When Microsoft starting to pump huge sums of money into pulicity, it was apparent that the XBox was going to be a success.

Some consolation is that MGS2 hasn't been toppled by any XBox game, proving that gameplay can win over PR, has there hasn't been much hype surrounding MGS2 in comparison to any XBox titles.

The people with power in the industry are consumers, just not the smart discerning ones.

I totally agree with that, as that is what next-gen IS all about. We wanted to see new things, original things, cool things, and all the Americans can do is moan about it.

I say, a phrase that many people are saying, and that is, "Give Miyamoto a chance!" He knows what he is doing so I think he should be left to do it.

:-)

Good orignal post by AliBoy as well.

Great post Ali.

As more and more titles come out, there will be less originality to spread around. Also, if one kind of genre is doing well, it'll be milked dry. As you said, no one will dare do anything new. Well not exacly 'No one', there is one genius who has tried out something that a lot of people don't aprove of.

Also i think it would be agreat if designers let us have a chance of making games. Okay not actually making them, but say there's a website where ideas are put forward, which ever gets the most votes gets made. It would be a great feeling.

Nice one Ali.

I think Miyamoto has brought the most to gaming, and one of the things I admire about him is that he doesn't rest on his laurels and rather than release graphical updates, he is always creating inventive, fun new games like Pikmin
