But this isn't just another ordinary game that is popular amongst the majority of gamers today... the GTA series has already had its effect on Gaming by influencing the minds of developers in-need of new ideas that will help their latest titles to sell.
First of all there's 'State of Emergency' - also developed by Rockstar (the GTA guys). This game may envolve you running around with big guns and other weapons while having fun, it doesn't last forever and lacks a lot of what GTA is all-about in it's size and variations of things to do and places to be. But even though it's not GTA, you can see how this game it solely based-around the idea of having "fun with guns" in a sea of big and bad people alike. Something that plays a big part in GTA 3, yet doesn't work-out as-well in a game of its own.
Then there's 'Mafia: The City of Lost Heaven' on the PC. As you will know, althrough the series, right-from the very-first GTA game on the PlayStation around 4 or 5 years ago, The Mafia have always featured frequently giving you jobs and life-threatening jobs to do that'll get you the quick-money you need in-order-to be done with one city for the time being. This top-selling PC shooter sees you getting envolved with some big guys (one called Tony) and a lot of dangerous weapons. Again, this picks-up on the idea of GTA being about having some fun with big-guns and exploring the "controlled" cities of America. PC gamers took to this game in seconds - possibly because they had an idea of what to expect after meeting The Mafia in GTA.
Here are just 2 well-known examples of how the GTA series has taken-its-toll on the minds of today's developers producing the goods for the No.1 consoles and formats. And believe me, there are several others. Each with their own take on one of GTA's crucial aspects. But, as you may expect, these 'crime elements' alone fail to have the impact Grand Theft Auto games have as a whole.
The most-wanted PlayStation-exclusive series isn't only effecting people in the Gaming business either. Since the release of the very first top-down GTA title we've seen Brittish rockers "Grand Theft Audio" rise and then sink in-and-out of known-existence in 2001. And then there's the film: "Grand Theft Auto". While it may not be directly based on any 1 of the popular titles it has become well-known simply because of the film's title! And nothing more. But a name alone isn't going to win it any Oscar or Bafta Awards anytime-soon in our lifetime!
Grand Theft Auto - the game that sells the PS2. And with Vice City heading-our-way in only 4 days they might aswell just give SONY the trophy now for winning the first Console War on the 21st Century and the new Millennium.
Surprisingly enough, we hear nothing about this game sending the arrogant youths of today into lifetimes of crime and dis-order, and games are supposedly bad influences on us too!!
A game series that influences and excels over other games.
Will we soon see new games created from the ideas of other, non-GTA games?
