Colin McRae is definatley worth it...
WRC is a bit more simmy and therefore not quite so immediate, the handling is not as smooth.
Ignore Nath - he's just a spong :D
Go for CMR3. You wont regret it.

For a good rally simulation I would go for CMR2(Which I will shortly).
I would say WRC2 isnt just as serious and is more of a laugh than anything else, and personally I find the handling is too sharp, I travel further on the roof than on the wheels.

Of the rally games, I've played demos of both PS2 and Xbox versions of CM3, and both look pretty much identical. The Xbox version is slightly clearer, but is basically a port of the PS2 code, and so isn't significantly different.
Personally, from what I've seen, WRC2 Extreme looks better than both versions.
If I was going to get a rally game (which I'm not), I'd go for WRC2 on the PS2. On the Xbox, I'd go for Rallisport Challenge - or wait for RC2.

if you want a ps2 rally game then it is the best there is at the moment. xbox version is better tho, and pc will be too probably. wrc2 is looking good, if they get that damn handling sorted. i like the rally mode in gran turismo3 personally
