Picture the scene if you will, It’s the swinging 60’s; the British music industry is at its peak. Bands like the Beatles, The Rolling Stones and The Who have hit the big time not just here but across the Atlantic and British bands are leading the way in a cultural and musical revolution. So what went wrong? When did we become such a nation of robots, being force fed inane tunes and even more inane boy/ girl bands with severe lack of talent and presence. The musical revolution starts here people and I for one and not gonna sit by anymore and let those guys with their ponytails in their swanky penthouse apartments who call themselves record producers and even worse ‘A n R’ men tell me who and what style of music we listen to.
Now I know what you’re thinking, ‘ he doesn’t have to listen to this kind of music if he doesn’t want to’. ‘There’s always the off switch’ etc. Well I agree, but when did this music become the mainstream, and why is it that as hard as we try we can’t escape it.
Going back too the sixty’s the music had feeling, it had a tune (god I sound like my old man!) and it had longevity. What do we have now? Mindless repetitions of the same song structures and the same kind off sounds. Play me a song by A1, Westlife, or any other boy band and will hard pushed to tell you who it is because they all sound the same. No wonder 50% of their tracks tend to be covers. Don’t get me wrong; I have no problem with people listening to any kind off music they like as long as they enjoy listening to it but don’t we deserve to hear something better. The greatest bands in this country are relegated to small time venues and battles with their record companies over artistic freedom because all the money is pumped into the new ‘Boys R Us’ or ‘ Boytown’ because that’s what sells. I guess what I’m trying to say is since when was music ever been about making money. It should be about the songs, the emotion and the feeling you get when you hear it and sadly this not a very sought after commodity when it comes to the record industry these days. Some of the greatest albums of the last decade were from ‘real’ bands with humble indie beginnings such as Radiohead, Blur, The Stone Roses, and dare I say it Oasis to name but a few. But still at the top end of the charts we see the over hyped and manufactured there in abundance. Now I like many others have no real interest in the charts anymore but unfortunately record sales is now the make or break for any artist or band that find themselves on a major record label or any of its subsidiaries but why does it have to be like this. So god bless the indie labels for they are our saviours and will give us sanctity from all that is tiresome and monotonous in our hour of need.
I appreciate your time in reading as it was written in the attempt of finding a likewise opinion amongst us. I look forward to reading the replies.

Im not really an Indie enthusiast as you put it. My music collection consists of a wide range of styles. And yes you are right i do have a habit of criticising other peoples musical tastes and i am a musical snob. But with good reason. I just want the industry to realise that some of us are a little tired of them rehashing the same old formula again and again. I would like to be proud of the british music industry. unfortunately and this moment in time im not. Sorry.

Sorry about the double posting there, my internet conenction went all funny for a bit...

Anyway you;ve made a crucial point, its only a dumbing down of what you see as music, your music is not everyones music and saying that pop is dumbed down music would suggest you have no appreciation for what music is, or tries to do.

Thats entertain people and make them feel good, help them understand and help them cope with life. Music isn't about bashing other forms of music and never has been, in fact its only the indie enthusiasts who ever start these topics in the first place...

I see what your trying to say but what about the quality of the music? How many have any input into what they do. Its a dumbing down of something i hold sacred. Music!

Wihtout the money from mainstream music most record labels couldn't afford to even risk so called "Indie" bands, they cannot exist without mainstream.

Every Indie bands wants to become mainstream anyway, look at your examples ! Oasis, Blur, Radiohead, they're all just producers of 'nearly' pop music. The mainstream is where the cold hard cash is, and don't say that indie bands are in it for the music alone...... And why start a topic against mainstream music, i.e. pop. by telling us how great the Beatles i.e. one of the greatest pop bands of all time, were ?
