Welcome to Chez RM18 (catchy, isn’t it?), where the worlds of consoles and culinary creations are combined to form one delicious dolloping of games and great food. Sounds good, doesn’t it? You’ve heard of internet cafes, so why not extend the franchise to game cafes? With the amount of themes in games, a themed restaurant based on the gaming worlds of Nintendo, Square, Sega, Capcom and Co. would be a sure fire hit, and would beat Planet Hollywood any day. As well as tucking into some great nosh from the chefs, we could sample what the best game developers could ‘cook up’ as well! Here are a few ideas for the menus:

Luigi Lasagne (made with Mario Mozzarella of course!)
It simply could not help but be included. When you look at Mario and Luigi there are many differences – one’s thin, and one er… isn’t, they wear different colour clothes, one has starred in loads of Nintendo classic, and one has starred in only one. Ahem. But the main similarities, apart from both having moustachioed and wearing fashionable blue dungarees, is that they are both Italian! And what is Italy famous for, I hear you cry? No, not pizza. What else is it famous for? No, apart from ice cream. *sigh* I’ll tell you – pasta! So the two could be combined for a thematic treat!

Solid Snake’s Solid Snake
No, not that you dirty minded…Oh, you weren’t thinking that. *cough*. I am referring to the snake, a somewhat exotic dish granted, but it’s got to be adventurous, hasn’t it ? I think it’s a delicacy some places (especially if Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom is anything to go buy), and if it was my themed restaurant (and it is my themed restaurant :D) then it’s gonna be included. For the kiddies, they can have those sweet snake things you get in Pick ‘n’ Mix.

Banjo’s Kooked Kazooie
Fed up with her incessant squawking, moaning and complaining (especially when it rhymes) Banjo has decided to do the decent thing to help his friend’s problem. Eat her. I’m not actually sure what type of bird Kazooie is (I think it’s a red breasted breegull or summat – is that edible?), so it can be any bird you like – turkey, chicken etc., with red colouring of course, it has to be realistic. A worthwhile addition to my menu, methinks.

Lara’s Luscious Lemon Sorbet
And for dessert… that’s right, a Lara Croft themed dessert is bound to bring the punters in, from spotty geeks who think she is real, to the people who buy her game every Christmas, despite it not being any different from the one before. This doesn’t actually have any connection with the Tomb Raider series, call it a promotion if you will. Lara’s Luscious Lemon Sorbet…mmm, tasty ( I know she’s not real).

See if you can think of any!

Now onto business. First, food in games? What sort of a title is that? Well, so far on these here forums, people have discussed and dissected just about every facet of gaming – we’ve discussed films and games, TV programmes and games, soaps and games etc. but we missed out one thing we need to live. Food. Most of us probably spend about as much time thinking about food as we do games, so why not look at its uses and feature in games so far, and how it could be implemented in the future.

Looking at the actual use of food in games, it’s been pretty sporadic and unusual so far, to say the least. In Mario games, the only prominent foodstuff is mushrooms, which have the somewhat strange effect of increasing Mario in height, length and weight. Mmmm, not sure what ‘sort’ of ‘mushrooms’ Mario is eating, but judging by the looks of it, they are more size-altering than mind-altering! Continuing on the weird sort of use so far, in games like Power Stone 2 and Super Smash Bros. Melee, not to mention loads more that currently escape me, food like hamburgers and chips are used as …health! Since when have chips and burgers been healthy? Ronald McDonald has a lot to answer for…

Joking aside, its use has been limited so far. Insofar as the ‘health’ thing goes, that’s probably the only way it could be feasibly implemented so far. RPGs and such have included them, and they could be used as bargaining tools, or sustenance on your travels, like in Pokemon for example, or to mix to provide health, like in Paper Mario. Not many ‘realistic’ games has used them, probably only Shenmue, which contained various foodstuffs, some for sale and some not.

Yet they weren’t included – some lifelike game that turned out to be – Ryo only drank fizzy drinks, and the only thing digesting food was the cat you had to feed. If you think about it, there is potential in that sort of thing – food could be bought and consumed, and if it was healthy food, then you would be faster, stronger, etc, but if it wasn’t then you’d suffer in battle. I know it’s a bit too obsessive to detail, but if you’re marketing a game based around that sort of thing, it’s an option worth exploring. Food and games? Not really used to it’s fullest yet, but I wouldn’t mind seeing it used more frequently

Thanks for reading, Russ
