To list the books and games he has written and contributed towards would be a long task that wouldn't include the majority of his efforts, yet titles such as 'The Sum of All Fears' and 'Rainbow Six' are what helped to give him the image he has today. To get an insight into how his mind works I would like to share with you a look into some of his work as an author and a military enthusiast, this is the real Tom Clancy!
Rainbow Six:
Some maybe unaware of what the title stands for and others may not care, yet although several games and books have been written about the 'Six' information about how they came about and why they exist today has pretty much been left in the closet. The name 'Rainbow' is the key part to the title which roughly translates as an 'Anti-Terrorist Covert Operations group' who take on missions around the world trying to eliminate strong terrorist groups who pose a threat to the American Government and to the American citizens. As part of a team which usually consists of six operatives they also rescue high profile hostages from either native or American soil.
The book is one of the most compelling and gripping I have ever read and at any one time you feel as though something is going to happen. Each chapter leaves you on a knife edge of corruption, politics and freedom yet clues as to what happens next are almost of a cryptic sort. The novel tells a tale of a corrupt group of terrorists who threaten to wipe out neighbouring countries using powerful biological weapons which will cause devastation and death around the world. Written from a 3rd person perspective helps to portray how each character feels without there being a biased view on any in particular one.
The first Rainbow Six game was launched during the middle of the 1990's and at the time it was a bench-mark title which delivered something that previous games had yet to discover... A feeling of high tension. Every corner you turn in the game, every approach you use and whatever route you decide to take relies on your ability to think fast and work as a unit. Before each mission you can read briefings on what is required of you and get a detailed insight into what you are fighting against and what you are trying to stop. Planning ahead is an essential part of Rainbow Six and without it you are left in the middle of a situation with not many places to go.
Using tension as his main accolade Tom Clancy creates an atmosphere which not many authors manage to do. Rainbow Six is a great tale of terrorism at its worst yet patriotism at is highest possible level. Whether you play the game or read the book you will only then begin to realise how Tom Clancy portrays the world as it is today.
The Sum of All Fears:
Not too far away from Rainbow Six but his views on politics in general are much more in-depth and a lot more descriptive. America has its last chance but what to do? A terrorist group has planned to launch a Nuclear War into the heart of American soil, yet one man is left to pick up the pieces. 'Jack Ryan' plays the main character in the novel as he tries to go under cover and reveal what could prove to be a disaster for the world's political and economical plans. The president suspects that Russia is behind the threat yet Jack knows otherwise, who to tell and where to go?
The novel explores a range of Tom Clancy's different styles and they all help to piece together areas of Tom Clancy's feelings which are not only surprising but hard to believe at times. Tom Clancy gathers all his ideas together and expresses them through the main character of the book. Not only does the main character have to uncover the plot to attack America but his marriage is on the line and drastic measures need to be taken quickly before the situation becomes any deeper. Using non-lethal forces 'Jack' works as an operative with his back against the wall yet like a man in a hurry.
As far as tension goes at times the book goes away into the deep background of politics and the government yet it all leads to a particular event which effects the out come of each episode of 'Jack's' life. Although not working as a unit 'Jack' has to use strategy and stealth in order to stop what could be the end of America as we know it yet at different times the book branches off into different areas leaving you wondering what is going to happen next. As a book it is one of the most atmospheric and dramatic I have ever read, but as a game it seems to lose track of the events of the original novel and stray into a much more linear area of the story which uses the Rainbow Six engine. Despite the game I am looking forward to watching the film when it is released on DVD early next year. More in-depth than Rainbow Six yet the tension level seems to drift in and out where as Rainbow Six sustains throughout.
The book addresses different methods of warfare which Tom Clancy does not include in the other books which I have read. The main character works alone yet his ability to execute his tasks runs in a par as the Rainbow Six team. Atmosphere, drifting tensions and a will to succeed, if you read a book this month make sure this is the one!
A Brief Look into the game 'Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell':
Although not one of Tom Clancy's novels the game tells a story of how one man is sent under cover to diffuse a situation which could end the world. Taking on the role of 'Sam Fisher' sees you infiltrating terrorist buildings and diffusing situations before anything becomes of them. Without the novel it is hard to compare the story in the game to how it would appear in the book, yet after playing the Demo and researching the game its seems like 'The Sum of All Fears' crossed with Metal Gear Solid 2 which is an aspect to Tom Clancy which I have yet to see up until this point.
Forgetting the next generation graphics the story seems to follow the pattern of a series of missions combining together to tell the story of why he is there and what he is doing. 'Sam Fisher' (alias the Splinter Cell) is a special government agent sent under cover to reveal the plans of a terrorist organisation that not only poses a threat to America but possibly the human race as well. With games the story is limited to either cut-scenes or in-game dialogue and as 'Splinter Cell' focus' on the in-game engine over CG Cut Scenes it is left down to the 'Splinter Cell' and the organisation behind him to tell the story and lead the gamer into a world of terror and deceit.
'Splinter Cell' looks to explore an area of Tom Clancy which different characters from his numerous novels have portrayed. From the willing mind of 'Jack Ryan' to the determination of the 'Rainbow Six' team are just a couple of attributes to name which 'Sam Fisher' uses to un-cover the mystery behind his mission.
The Mind behind Tom Clancy:
Betrayal, Deceit, Lies and corruption are just a few traits which Tom Clancy uses in his various novels to create the environment which makes his novels so unique. From the heart of Russia to his home soil America Tom Clancy manages to set a scene which would be hard to describe in 1000 words. A private man in real life yet once a new idea enters his head we are given new standards of what both books and games need to head for. In terms of gaming the majority of his titles have been awarded accolades which they deserve, from the team work in 'Rainbow Six' to the 'Lone Wolf' style found in the new game 'Splinter Cell' it all seems to blend with a touch of Tom Clancy class which other games find hard to re-create. As far as close combat simulation goes 'Tom Clancy' is second to none, the level of realism found in his games is of an almost un-beatable standard.
The mind of a genius can be found within yet I have only touched the surface of a man with great aspirations and a talent that many find hard to find. If you are looking for tension, action and atmosphere then look no further than a Tom Clancy book, not only is he a true genius of his time but an inspiration for gamers and readers world-wide! The Mind of Tom Clancy is a puzzle which I can not fully understand but I am sure there is more to come which could help to piece together what makes him the man he is today!
