Sensible World of Soccer is the best football game of all time. That’s not an exaggeration, it’s the staid fact that so many soccer fans appreciate. Sensible Soccer was first released by Sensible Software on Commodore’s Amiga computers roughly a decade ago. The first few versions of this soccer sim were all about playing the game, but Sensible World of Soccer brought a whole world of football clubs, domestic leagues and continental tournaments together with a managerial aspect to fans of the series via two sacred 3.5" floppy disks.

Sensible Soccer was so madly playable that it went beyond being ‘merely’ a football game. This was the new Pong, only more addictive. It was played at a frenetic pace and anything could happen (scoring from the halfway line wasn’t only possible but, with enough skill, a distinct likelihood). However, Sensible World of Soccer (nicknamed SWOS) married this with a strategic element to forge the greatest sporting achievement since Track & Field. Now you could manage a side from practically any country and embark upon a 20-year career as coach or, better still, player-coach. Man management, tactical work, transferring players, weighing job offers from other clubs… it was all there, along with the finest gameplay possible. There was really nothing more that could be added to SWOS without detracting from it. It was, in essence, the perfect game.

So here’s my only gripe: where’s the update? All that’s needed is a simple port of the original SWOS code, with some editing of player’s names and the like, and voila! The best thing since... well, since the original. Obviously not many punters would be impressed be an archaic-looking game plonked on the PS2 (with Pro Evo Soccer and FIFA 2002 being the titles other games want to aspire to graphically-wise), but a Game Boy Advance rendition, or even a PSOne or N64 version, would be amazing. Not to look at, but to enjoy. And on the other hand, what is stopping the developer to have a go at a brand-new version of the game for the next-gen consoles? Having said that, there was actually an update recently on the PSOne, but this was a fabled attempt at improving the perfect, which, of course, backfired in the publisher’s face. No, what we really want (and I probably speak for a fair proportion of football-loving Europeans here) is the original SWOS with up-to-date statistics and squads – simple. Surely this isn’t asking too much. I imagine it’d take a competent programmer and a statistician a few months at most to port SWOS to the GBA, so please – someone – make it happen!

Sometimes I really want to get one of my old machines out and have a good go at some of the games that made them years so great. Id also quite like to play FIFA 97 on MegaDrive since that was the game that got me into computer games. I played many other before but wasnt that keen on them..

a wise man indeed who started this topic. SWOS is by far the best football game EVER made just for it's sheer addictiveness. Will i still be playing Pro Evolution Soccer in 10 years time? Most probably not. Will i still be playing SWOS? You damn right i will be.
Although in the year of 98 the darkest day in videogame history occured when that awful update of SWOS was released on the playstation. How they got away with that trash is beyond me.
I've said just get SWOS from the amiga update the teams and just plonk it on a PS2 disk not touching anything else and anyone that hasn't been warped by the evil fifa series and can actually recognise a good game would go out and buy it. I know i'd be first in queue for my copy.
Either that or my second suggestion would be to take a load of amiga classics and shove them all on a PS2 disk. Get alot of games on there with all that space.

Anyway for everyone old enough, chant with me that SWOS was and STILL is the BEST

Remember what happened last time they tried to port it to PSOne though. That was awful. But like u say if they kept it the same and maybe released it at 19.99 then it could be succesful.

Sensi World of Soccer is still one of my all time favourite games - I still play mine on the Amiga from time to time!!

An updated version would be awesome, I was only thinking the other day that they should release a new copy of the game!!

I think GBA would be the "sensible" - ha ha - choice to bring it to but after the failure of the updated version to PSX I would be very surprised if they would consider doing a new one.

Wow... SWOS..

Now thats a blast from the past, what a fantastic game! the great thing about that game was that not only was the gameplay fantatic but you could also manage, buy players and play how you wanted to.

God I miss my amiga for games like this super cars and Kick off.

I don't think Kick off is coming out on the PS 2 its meant to be called Kick 2 Kick or something like that.

its on Konami.com

I still get out my copy of SWOS every summer and bring down the Amiga from the attic or wherever the hell it is hiding.

Heard somthing about Kick-off coming out for the PS2. Is it still coming out?

Only problem with SWOS is that it is a game that relies on gameplay alone. Changing too much of it could completly ruin the game and ruin the legend that is sensible soccer. Amiga version is perfect, loading times are the only things that let it down.

Also, who the hell is gonna buy SWOS? Only us mans who remember it from the good old days. None of these new age punks are gonna choose it over FIFA are they? Especially with its top-down view.

Yeah, an update would be good, re-unite with an old friend so to speak. I can still feel the good old days, with the crap graphics but ace game play. :D

I cant understand why they havent made one though, its not like it would take much effort. But then, that might be it, they might see that its pointless making the effort at all with the likes of Pro Evo on the shelfs.

One day though...one day.
