I'm a fan of RPGs and I've been playing them for quite a while now. I noticed that most of them a pretty limiting in what you can do, which is a shame as the orginal RPG games (non computer ones that is) are usually limitless. I have also noticed that the games have generally got much better in recent years, although until recently I would have said that the more 'popular' games were my least favorite. That was, until I noticed Baulders Gate.

Baulders Gate was a much better experience than other games I played because it was so much closer to the original TSR games I used to play. It seemed really different to the other Role Playing games that went before and I really felt myself getting in to it. When Icewind Dale came out it was even better! Although it was based on the same game it improved everything bar the graphics. It is one of those games where you think 'Im going to play for another ten minutes' then look at the clock and see that two hours have gone by! You get so involved with the characters and story and there are some lovely cut scenes too.

This made me think, what could they do in the future to improve RPG games? With the internet they could do a lot, I think. Having lots of people play the characters and even having NPCs 'played' by real people to make the whole experience more 'realistic' They could also have changing environments with someone in charge (like a dungeon master, but not so involved). I know there are internet games like this already, but most of the ones I've seen just don't seem to have the same feel or depth as the polished single player games. I've heard of something coming out for the dreamcast (I think) but as I only own a PC, I'd like to see something that captures my imagination and time like the boxed games do.

well it's yer lucky day! there is an RPG game which has most of the features you want comming out for the PC (and if you'd been paying attention you'd know that! buy PC Gamer or something!). NeverWinter Nights (ah, now you remember...) is going to have the ability to be a gamesmaster as well as adventurer, you will also be able to put together your own maps and adventures. So that's nice, not out till mid next year i don't think but it's looking like being well worth the wait (and it's made by the same people who made Baldur's Gate and so forth, Black Isle).
