Which game(s), or developer have altered the future of gaming more than any other, what is driving the industry forward. Well in terms of games I feel SEGA and Nintendo as companies have pushed forward into new boundaries of games, SEGA have broke into so many new types of game with, SEGA Bass Fishing, Samba Di Amigo, Jet Grind Radio, and Shenmue. I know a lot of people haven’t heard of Shenmue but I don’t have a Dreamcast and seeing and hearing about Shenmue is making me want to get one, it will be huge, like no other game before it, which epitomises SEGA at the moment. Nintendo have continued to produce outstanding games, where the game isn’t as original, but nevertheless the games blow us away, Zelda, Mario, Perfect Dark. They have a relatively old engine, Perfect Dark is just a FPS but once Rare, and Nintendo get their hands on it we have some of the greatest games ever. Sony have great games, mainly because the freedom the Playstation gave third party developers. CD’s allowed games to press forward, and Sony more importantly turned the Playstation into a fashion icon that everyone wanted, Nintendo and SEGA couldn’t do that, games used to be for ‘kids’ and ‘dorks’ not any more. SEGA is pressing the internet forward and online gaming. Square has done enormous amounts for RPG’s bringing them to a wider audience. Konami have developed great games down the years and are putting the limits of the PS2 way behind anyone else. What will Microsoft add to the computer industry. With world-wide launches Microsoft will make regional delays a thing of the past.

But what does this have to do with the future, well my point is this. All of the developers and Companies and games have brought in there own way something unique to the gaming industry. As the industry stands now at the most healthy position it has ever been, in both financial terms and in respect of its profile, the factors that allowed this were composite. In order for the industry to continue to grow at this rate and fulfil the potential it has with all the good ideas we read and speak about, we will need a makeup of many companies. Whether or not you like SEGA you will benefit from all the good work it is putting in for the Gaming Internet. Whether or not you like Microsoft you will benefit from its global strength. Why because the industry as a whole will prosper. I know there is lots more factors we could talk about what do people think, which developers / games / companies have helped so far and what will help in the future?

Someone else wrote something before about games now being seen in a better light.
I don't think games were only seen as being for kids personally, I think they were just more underground back in the past. Although it wasn't talked about much, I don't think it was seen as 'dorky' (now there's a word I've not heard in a while!) just not so popular as other pastimes. All Sony did was to make it a more public event and put a big popular company name on the hobby.
I believe that the companies are making a loss on consoles but gaining on software, Sony doing it through licencing and Sega partly through their own software division. If they were all losing too much money they wouldn't bother.
I've always loved playig games and have a lot of memories of good games, but it's still an exciting time to be a gamer and the only thing other than the hardware to have changed is the way in which the consoles and games are advertised and accepted. Plus the audience now being bigger than it has previously been. From the company's point of view, it is more of a mass-market product than it used to be.
