Subject: Re: BT-H Seal
The message reads:
Cool!!
We can print our own Banknotes!!
Have news also on Rotor/ Magnets!
Have a Great Night!
Off to see Harry Krishna Tomorrow!
See You Monday
Rex"
Now looking at this e-mail you'd think I told him something that he found cool, you'd think I'm engaging in some illegal activities involving the copying of banknotes. You'd also think maybe my work has something to do with rotor/magnets and I'm off somewhere soon one night (and of course visiting my good friend Rex on Monday)
The truth:
I don't know a Rex. I have not e-mailed a Rex, I have never met this guy. I have no idea what he is talking about. None of this e-mail makes sense. I'm very happy to know he's off to see Harry Krishna and I look forward to seeing him on Monday.. well I might do if I knew who he was.
Then there is a second random e-mail from another lovely person...

Subject: segundo examen c (you what!?!)
The Message Reads:
"Hola como estas ?
Este es el archivo con la información que me pediste
Nos vemos pronto, gracias."
and there is a suspicious file attachment "segundoexamenc.m.doc.lnk"
A quick look at the word "gracias" suggests this is in Spanish. Okay.. I clearly don't no this girl as I can't speak Spanish. I don't know any Spanish people... so where did this e-mail come from? And what is she trying to send me? So off to Babelfish I go to get a rough idea of what this is about.
"Hello like these?
This it is the file with the information that you requested to me
We see ourselves soon, thanks."
Okay is anyone thinking what I'm thinking? Would I really request a file from a Spanish person for some information. Information from a person I don't know I must add, that also speaks a language alien to me. I might be wrong but could this be a virus!!?! Looks like there's a problem with this virus - not convincing enough.
I also have received quite a few other "random" e-mails - one was apparently answering a question I allegedly asked them a few weeks ago on msn.com
Anyway, so what's my point? My point is e-mail - is it a reliable form of communication in comparison to the letter? Sure it's quick, cheap and easy to use but there are other factors that make it not so good. If a letter comes through the door with a different name to yourself on it, the normal honest person would keep it aside and some how forward it to the intended person, however if with e-mails like my message from Mr. Caunt, they go to the wrong place, there is no privacy. It's addressed to me, so I read it.
I've also known numerous e-mails not to get to people - "getting lost in the servers" - however I never hear about this. Sure they tell me when the e-mail address I try sending it to does not exist but still.
There's also the fact that people change their email addys so much. I have like two Shaneo's on my msn list I think, and three Turbonutters; none of which I must add ever seem to come on. This changing of e-mail addresses annoys me because if you cancel an e-mail address, most people just leave it to die. No new e-mails are forwarded to the new address like in houses.
I agree e-mail is the way of communication of the future, but I just feel it needs such a small amount of work that could make it brilliant. The random e-mails from people I have never talked to it, most of which is spam - far worse than spam through your letter box (some of which involve girls who tell me "they've lost their pants and need help finding them" in my hotmail account). If e-mail companies could just sort out their blocking features, which really really don't work, as I still manage to get 5 spam e-mails a day, and if they could add features which forwards e-mail or notifies an e-mailer that an account has been frozen or has been inactive, and if people could please stop changing e-mails, maybe the e-mail could be the communication of the future, but right now, I must say it irritates me a lot...
I still think this is a virus though as it's lnk not ink. I think they were trying to disguise it as something not suspicious (which failed in my case). I also remember worm virus' tend to claim they are sending a file they asked for... pretty much the same context but different language.
Good ol' virus'
Hello, how are you
This is an archive of the information about my (something)
Write back soon, thanks
What I find funny, is that the file she's attached is a shortcut. That really cracks me up, when people send the shortcuts but not the actual file. Had to explain it to my grandfather many a time when he kept sending me shortcuts of things.
