The church are hoping this will not only give Jesus more appeal worldwide, but also bring more young people to the church too, who will hopefully play the games, and want to learn more.
The Vicar of Dibley issued the following statement: "Well, you know Mario and jesus have very similar backgrounds, well apart from the virgin birth thing, but both were carpenters for a short while. When Mario better known as Jumpman, he was still into carpentry, only when he got the part in Mario Bros did he have to change vocation to be a plumber, as pipes gave more gaming opportunity. Jesus too moved on from his humble carpentry days, in which he assisted his father Joseph, to performing miracles, and hanging with his disciples. As such we see plenty of scope for games based on his life, which should have universal appeal to gamers."
The first game from newly created developer 'Development Disciples' will be based around the birth of Christ, and be an adventure featuring multiple characters and missions. As Joseph you must seek a little donkey, and ensure it has the strength to carry a heavily pregnant Mary into Bethlehem. Once there you must find shelter for the night, in a barn, with animals. Other playable characters include wise men that must follow a star to Bethlehem, and shepherds that also want to see the birth of the King. Gifts must be collected on the way too, and there will be side quests to keep you coming back for more! This is planned for a Xmas 2002 release.
Other titles will include 'Jesus vs Temptation' a game that puts you in the wilderness for 40 days. The game will be similar to old-school beat em-up's like Golden Axe, but based in an ever evolving 3D world. Each day Jesus will have to battle against wild creatures starting with rats and bats, but as you progress through the game they will getbigger and tougher, including tigers, bears and elephants. On the 40th day Jesus must resist the tempation of the Devil by kicking his head in.
'Jesus Christ Super Kart' Will allow you to play as Jesus and race against evil Jews and Romans, unlocking other playable disciples along the way. It's said to feature a revolutionary power-up system in which you can perform miracles on various objects to assist you, such as turnig trees into catapults and parting the waves for short cuts.
Also planned is a real time strategy in which you must spread you teaching around Galilee and onto Jerusalem, making sure you keep your armies fed with plenty of bread and fish, and a 'whodunnit?' title based around the events in the Garden of Gethsemane, and the Last Meal.
Whether these and other titles will give Jesus that popularity boost that the Christian church hopes for remains to be seen, but one thing's for sure, we're going to see something really different coming from 'Development Disciples' coming really soon, and I can't wait!

Wouldn't suprise me! If it wasn't for celebrating christmas, i reckon most kids these days wouldn't know much if anything about Jesus.
Sad really
He was only 5 foot something.
But Mickey Mouse and Mario are more well known around the world than Jesus is. This is a fact.

I agree....Dont dis.
I have often thought that more characters from history should feature in games. I think it'd be amusing.
I like the 40 days and 40 nights game. Kind of like a Biblical "Surviror".
