If you were to ask a Playstation owner 5 years ago who Tony Hawk is and what does he do? they probably would’ent have a clue.
Then if you were to ask them what ‘The 900’ is they would probably reply by asking “Is it a gun?”.
THPS revolutionised the way the average gamer thought about skateboarding, We used to think that it was for enoying kids or stupidly dressed spanners with no life. Not after you played that game, it was the first recognised and good skateboarding game since 720.
The main plus point about THPS was that it was actually good,
It had nice graphics, great tricks, good longetivity, great multiplayer and it rewarded you well, but most importantly it was fun to play. So with this great gameplay and good reviews in magazines it appealed to even the people who thought Tony Hawk was a bird tamer and ‘The 900’ a gun. With this great fan base of the game and the huge success of it, a year later Neversoft released the sequel quite appropeatly named THPS2.
THPS2 was also a smash hit that improved and greatened from the original and made the astonishing sells to send it platinum.
So when Neversoft announced THPS3 on the PS2 no one could wait.
And now it is here at last and it astonishes and amazes once again.
As soon as you load up the DVD you are blasted with Motor Head: Ace of Spades and you remember what this game was all about. The Graphics of this new version are quite amazing, there smooth, bright, sharp and beautifully done. From the shine on your fancy deck, to the blood from your fancy head it is amazing. There are numerous skating areas from Canada to a cruise ship, which are all beautifully created. Every area is living with either work men working, pedestrians, moving cars, other skaters and probably the best, Babes in bikinis. This living environment really makes you feel like your actually skating in a real place rather than just a group of polygons specially designed for a computer game.
At the start of your experience to this game you will only have one area, and this is the system in which the game works. On each area there will be a numerous amount of tasks from getting certain scores to doing certain tricks. Other tasks in levels range from burying a bully, in which you have to bury a person who is throwing snow to soaking a boss worker by activating a crane that knocks him into some water. This gives the game a real prankster like feel and will appeal to kids and big kids alike.
The gameplay is astonishing as usual, You have to control a skateboarder from a 3rd person view and perform tricks with X for jump (Ollie), square for a flip move, triangle for a grind and O for a grab move. With these buttons you can also press a number of combinations using the D-pad which leads you to perform at least 100,000 different moves. One new feature to this game is revert, a move in which you turn on your board, it lets you continue with your tricks fluently without stopping.
The sound in this game is also really quite remarkable, the sound of your moves, the public and most noticeable the music.
This game is jam-packed! Full of nu metal, punk rock and rap hits from Motor Head to CKY and Alien Ant Farm. This is good for some, but for your classical artist or pop junky this may get a tad enoying.
Neversoft has whipped up some nice license from skate brands to the skaters them selves. There are 12 skaters in all from the best in the world, Tony Hawk and Rodney Mullen to Bam Margera one of the pranksters from the hit MTV show Jackass.
Although the game will only take a couple of hours to run through once the main idea is to complete it with many of the skaters, every skater has got 1 different task according to their way of skating, i.e. Street or Vert.
The game rewards very highly with secret skaters every time you complete the game with 3 or so people to Video clips of the skaters themselves and even the Neversoft team having a go. This really makes you feel that they have made the game for YOU and it really makes you appreciate it. There are also a number of secret parks for you to unlock, but it doesn’t stop at the unlocking.
There is a highly detailed Park-Editor that is really good, I lost 2 hours on it once creating my ideal skating dream.
There is also a very good create-a-skater, and probably the best ever seen.
Once everything is done you still won’t want to put the controller down because you can improve on your high scores and maybe send them in to your favourite magazine and get on that leader board.
The multiplayer in this game is amazing, you can play a lot of different games including trick attack, King of the hill, Graffiti and free skate. This game is also the first PAL game to have online play, you will have to buy the network modem to use it and then your all set up to face skaters from all around the world and to kick some American butt.
Overall this game is really remarkable, I’m surprise they can fit everything on one DVD without a hard-drive and that’s saying something.
So if you hate skateboarding or if it is your life, you really have to get this game just because it is so amazingly fun to play.
So for a great Skateboarding, multiplayer, online, one player, sport game you have to get this.
