DAVID SEAMAN
David is still Arsenal and England’s number 1 goalie. He has a great influence on the team and you always feel very safe with him in goal. He was born 19th September 1963 in Rotherham and before joining Arsenal on 15th May 1990 he had played for Leeds Utd, Peterborough Utd, Birmingham City and QPR. He made his Arsenal Debut on 25th August 1990 in a 3-0 win away against Wimbledon in the old first division.
RICHARD WRIGHT
Richard is one of the newest members of the Arsenal squad after joining Arsenal from hometown Ipswich in the summer. He is a great talent and at just 23 has already represented his country when he was awarded his first England Cap against Malta in June 2000. He is certain to take over from veteran goalie David Seaman when he decides to retire. Richard was born on the 5th November 1977 in Ipswich. He made his Arsenal debut with a 2-0 Premiership victory over Derby County on 29th September 2001.
STUART TAYLOR
Stuart came up through Arsenal youth development and signed professional on 1st August 1997 and is very highly rated. This season he has been Arsenals first choice keeper due to injuries to both David Seaman and Richard Wright. He has fitted in very nicely and I believe has a good future at the club. Stuart was born on the 28th November 1980 in Romford. He made his arsenal debut in a 2-1 defeat but Ipswich in the Worthington Cup 3rd Round on 1st November 2000.
ASHLEY COLE
Ashley has obviously been a great talent since a very young age seeming he has been at the club since he was 9. He came up through the youth development and last season had every young boys dream season. He played in the Champions League Quarter Final, FA Cup Final and become England’s first choice left back. Ashley is one of the best left backs I have seen, he loves to run up and down the wing as well as being a great defender which has offered arsenal with a lot more options. He was born on 20th December 1980 in Stepney and only signed a professional contract with arsenal on 24th July 2001. He made his arsenal debut against Middlesborough in a 2-2 draw in the Worthington Cup where Middlesborough went on to win 3-1 on pens. Ashley is a great player, which is why last season he picked up the Young player of the year award. Lets hope he stays away from injury for both Arsenal and England’s World Cup squad.
MATTHEW UPSON
Matthew is also one of the young great talents arsenal have to offer and who has been offered a chance to show what he can do in the first team due to injuries to both Tony Adams and Martin Keown. Matthew was signed from Luton Town on the 10th May 1997 and made his debut against Birmingham City in a 4-1 victory on the Coca-cola Cup on 14th October 1997. He was born on 18th April 1979 in Hartismere. Matthew is a very strong centre back with a great future and maybe even an England call up in the future.
MARTIN KEOWN
Well Martin has proved year after year that his is one of England’s best Centre backs. He is a very strong and determined defender and it is a great pleasure watching his throw his body in front of the ball to keep the ball out of the arsenal net. Martin was born on the 24th July 1966 in Oxford, which means he is one of arsenals so called “oldies”. The former arsenal apprentice joined back to the gunners on 1st Feb 1993 from Everton after spells at Aston Villa and Brighton. Martin has picked up many England Caps over his career and I’m sure he has more to offer. He made his arsenal debut on 23rd November 1985 in a 0-0 draw against WBA in the old first division.
TONY ADAMS
Tony has been Arsenals skipper since 1988 and has also been England captain 15 times. Although he is now retired from international football Tony is still a great player in English football. This season he has hardly played a game due to injury and there has been talk of him retiring. Tony has always been an Arsenal player and is on of Arsenals all time greats. He made his Arsenal debut on 5th November 1983 in a 2-1 defeat by Sunderland in the old first division. He then went on to sign for Arsenal professionally on 30th January 1984. Tony has been one of the best centre backs in the world over the last decade. He is a great role model for the younger players coming through and we wish he would come back soon.
SOL CAMPBELL
Sol Campbell is one of Arsene Wengers best signing. Sol didn’t cost the club anything after joining Arsenal from bitter rivals Tottenham Hotspurs on the 3rd July 2001. He made his debut for the club in a 4-0 victory over Middlesborough on 18th August 2001. He had come up through the Tottenham youth development but decided enough was enough at White Hart Lane and wanted to join a club where he could win trophies. Since joining the club he has played a major part in arsenals set up. He was born on the 18th September 1974 in Newham. He made his England debut in the 3-0 win over Hungary in May 1996 and when captaining his country against Belgium in May 1998 he became England’s youngest captain since Bobby Moore. Sol is going to have a great future at the club and with him at our helm we are certain to win more trophies.
LEE DIXON
Lee is one of arsenals oldest player if not the oldest. He was born on the 17th March 1964 in Manchester and had played for Stoke City, Bury, Chester City and Burnley before joining Arsenal on 29th January 1988. He made he debut in a 2-1 victory over Luton Town in the old first division on the 13th February 1988. During this season Lee has been another of those players who have been not available due to injury. His time at the club may now be near an end but arsenal will always remember him as one of the best right backs they have had. Over the last 13 years he has helped arsenal win many trophies and has played a very important role at the club.
LAUREN
The Cameroon international joined arsenal from Real Mallorca on 30th May 2000. Since then he has had a good start to his arsenal career and couldn’t have wished to score on his highbury debut against Liverpool. He made his Arsenal debut against Sunderland on the 19th August but lost 1-0 at the stadium of light. He joined arsenal to play in either central or wide midfield but has since moved to right back taking the place of the injured Lee Dixon. He is a key figure in the Cameroon team, winning the ‘Player of the Tournament’ trophy following his country’s victory in the 200O African Nations Cup and helping them qualify for the 2004 World Cup Finals. He looks to have been a great buy and looks set to have a good arsenal future ahead of him.
GIOVANNI VAN BRONKHURST
The Dutch international arrived at highbury from Rangers on the 19th June 2001. Since then I think he has had his moments but has relevantly stayed quiet, but I feel he has a lot more to offer the club. Giovanni has earned over 20 caps for his country. He was born on the 5th February 1975 in Rotterdam. Giovanni can play at either Centre or left midfield and left back which is where he usually plays for Holland. Before coming to Highbury he played for RKC Waalwijk, Feyenoord and Rangers. Giovanni is a great player and has become known for his powerful free kicks!
JUNICHI INAMOTO
The Japanese international signed for arsenal on 23rd July 2001 from Gamba Osaka. Junichi is the first Japanese international to sign a permanent contract with an English club. He is one of the greatest young talents Japan have to offer, his move to highbury attracted a lot of media all over the world. Junichi was born on the 18th September 1979 in Kagoshima. He made his arsenal debut on the 19th September 2001 in the 3-2 victory at home to Schalke 04 in the Champions League. One of the stars of the Japanese national team, Junichi was part of Japan’s Asian Cup winning side last year as well as their victorious Kirin Cup campaign.
GILLES GRIMANDI
I’m not sure why but I have never really rated Gilles but come of late he has had to fill into different places due to injuries etc and I feel he has done a great job. Gilles joined Arsenal on 17th June 1997 from AS Monaco after starting his career at Gap. Gilles is a useful player to have seeming he can play both centre midfield and defence. Grimandi was born in Gap on the 11th November 1970. The Frenchman made his arsenal debut in the premiership away fixture to Leeds on the 9th August 1997 where we drew 1-1.
FREDRIK LJUNGBERG
Freddie has become an arsenal favourite over the last season or two, this is mainly because he just pops up anywhere and has scored many important goals for the club. He was born on the 16th April 1977 in Sweden. The Swedish international can play anywhere in midfield and can also play upfront where he has played for his country a few times. Freddie signed for arsenal on the 12th September 1998 from Swedish club Halmstads. He made his arsenal debut in a 3-0 win over Manchester United in the premiership on the 20th September 1998. Freddie is well known for his ever changing hairstyle and colour. Freddie made history when he became the first player to score in an FA Cup Final at the Millennium Stadium, Cardiff.
ROBERT PIRES
The French international has been a great bonus for us this season he just the same as Freddie has scored many important goals. Robert is known for his amazing runs up and down the wings and delivering great crosses. He is one of the best dribblers of the ball in the premiership, which is why he has been played his world cup winning country France. Robert was born on the 29th January 1973 in Reims. He joined arsenal from Marseille on the 3rd July 20O0 after previously playing for FC Metz and Stade Reims. He made his Arsenal debut in a premiership away game against Sunderland where we lost 1-0 on the 19th August 2000. After winning World Cup 1998 and Euro 2O00, Robert continued to shine with France and he earned the ‘Golden Ball’ in the Confederations Cup.
PATRICK VIERIA
Patrick is maybe arsenals best player and is tipped to maybe be the best player in the world. He has lately been linked to Real Madrid for a World Record £50 Million transfer fee. Patrick is also a World Cup and Euro 20O0 winner. Patrick is maybe not best known for his goals but for his amazing display in the centre of midfield. He often makes great runs through a whole team or he will make a crucial tackle. Patrick was born on the 23rd June 1976 in Dakar. He joined arsenal from AC Milan on the 14th August 1996 and went on to make his arsenal debut on the 16th September 1996 in a 4-1 victory at home to Sheffield Wednesday in the Premiership. He has now been at arsenal for over 5 years now and is reported to want to move away from the club. His former clubs include AC Milan and Cannes, where he started off his career. Lets just hope he doesn’t leave!
EDU
Edu was born on the 15th May 1978 in Sao Paulo. Edu is maybe not a well recognised player yet, but I’m sure he will be over a matter of time. The Brazilian joined arsenal from Corinthians on the 16th January 20O1, he went on to make his debut 4 days later in a 0-0 draw against Leicester in the Premiership. But then got injured and is yet to break back into the arsenal squad but is close. Edu is a skilful midfield and can also play upfront, he is good in the air but I mainly known for his work-rate in midfield. He is also a World Club Championship winner whilst at Corinthians in 2000.
RAY PARLOUR
The English international is a gunner through and through after being at the club for over 10 years. He signed for arsenal as a youngster and has been here ever since. He has had his problems with injuries but he has got over them and is now starting to feature in Arsene Wengers plans again. He had been linked to clubs such as Sunderland but never went. Ray was born on the 7th March 1973 in Romford and signed for arsenal on the 24th July 1991. He made his arsenal debut in a 2-0 defeat by Liverpool on the 29th Jan 1992 in the old first division at Anfield. Hopefully ray can stay fit and maybe feature in Sven’s World Cup Squad.
DENNIS BERGKAMP
Dennis has been a highbury favourite ever since he joined arsenal from Inter Milan on the 3rd July 1995. He was born on the 10th May 1969 in Amsterdam. He started his footballing career at Ajax and become one of the world’s greatest players there, he then moved to Inter but had a troubled time there before moving to Arsenal. Dennis won the Football Writers’ Footballer of the Year 1997/98 and the Players’ Player of the Year 1998. Dennis made his Arsenal debut on the 20th August 1995 in a 1-1 draw against Middlesborough in the Premiership. Dennis has now retired from international football but still holds the Dutch record of 37 goals.
SYLVAIN WILTORD
Sylvain is Arsenals record signing of £13 Million on the 26th August 2000 after joining from Bordeaux. The French international was born on the 10th May 1974 in Neuilly-Sur-Marne. Sylvain joined Arsenal following his memorable late equaliser for France in the Final of Euro 2000. He was the league’s top scorer with 22 goals in 33 games when Bordeaux won the French Championship in 1999. Sylvain’s former clubs are Bordeaux, Deportivo and he started his career at Stade Rennais. He is well known for his pace and runs into the corners. He was brought as a striking partner to Thierry Henry but has lately been playing out on the wings. Lets see more of Wiltord.
KWANKWO KANU
The Nigerian international is one of the skillfulest players I have ever seen. He joined arsenal from Inter Milan on the 15th January 1999 after also playing for Ajax. The giant Nigerian is 2 meters tall which makes him a great player to have in the box. He was born on the 1st August in Oweri. A key member of the Nigerian national side, Kanu captained them to their historic 1996 Olympics win. After recovering from a life threatening heart complaint, Kanu created The Kanu Nwankwo Heart Foundation which helps others with cardiac problems. He has often been the main striker along side Thierry Henry this season and it has proved to have paid off. He was also another player to be rumoured to be leaving the club to teams such as Deportivo, but never did.
FRANCIS JEFFERS
Francis is one of my favourite players and at being very young is believe he has a great future as both an Arsenal and England player. Jeffers come up through the Everton youth development and scored 20 goals in 40 games for them. Wenger saw this and thought he would be a great player to sign this is why he paid £8 million for him. He was born on the 25th January 1981 in Liverpool. Francis joined arsenal on the 14th June 2001 and has since only played a few games before getting injured which he still is. The young England striker made his arsenal debut in a 2-1 defeat by Leeds on the 21st August 2001. We are yet to see the best of great young talent.
THIERRY HENRY
Well I saved my best till last. I think Thierry Henry is just amazing and arsenal wouldn’t be arsenal without him. He has been one of the most important players at arsenal since joining from Juventus for £10 million on the 3rd August 1999. Thierry was born on the 17th August 1977 in Paris and has played for Juventus and at AS Monaco where he started his career. Thierry was France’s top scorer in their World Cup winning side as well as scoring three goals at Euro 2000. His blistering pace and powerful shooting made him one of the most feared strikers in the country, and his volleyed goal to defeat Manchester United at Highbury in October wont be forgotten in a hurry. Thierry made his arsenal debut against Leicester on 7th August 1999 where we won 2-1 at home in the Premiership. Lets keep him for as long as we can!
Thanks for reading, I hope you know a lot more facts about the Arsenal players now!
And what if the title race STILL hasn't been settled by then! What a match it could be!! - and it'd better not be a pay per view match!
But after the shocking display against Middlesbrough yesterday, and with Arsenal having TWO games in hand, the gunners could just nick it - leaving us with NOTHING this season except Diego Foraln! :C
I also think that it'll be no surprise if the FA Cup does go back to Highbury - but at least you can't attempt 'THE Treble' now!! :P
So now were in the FA cup semi-final this means the moan united Vs Arsenal game will be rescheduled that will make the title race more interesting
Arsenal are only 1 point behind with 2 games in hand with the OT game to go. That day Marc Overmars won the day...Hopefully his replacement will not be playing...
Make no mistake about it, you will miss Pires. Just look at how many assists he has made this season...Involved in the first two goals today as well.
As for Pires, hopefully it's nothing serious - but we can manage comfortably without him! :-)
Although it is only a few weeks to th big game at OT. Woudnt want to be going there without the main man Pires...
I think this 'off the line' thing has been going on since the rules changes and keepers were allowed to move along the line. But they seem to move infront of it, rather than ALONG it!
I also don't know how refs allow this to happen!!
No comentaters or anyone comment on this, and they all seem happy to let this happen!
Imagine how many penalties could've gone the other way if goalies had stuck to their lines....
I also do not belive that I have seen a 'fully legal' kick taken since the new rules were introduced several years ago.
On a very slight change of topic... I can't actually remember the last time I saw a legal penalty taken. As far as I know, the keeper is supposed to be ON his line, and not moving; the keeper is usually a foot or so in front of his line, and more often than not moving!
