Its the year 2317 and gaming has evolved, consoles no longer exist, and gaming has been taken to another level, a level thats real.
There is only one console, called a portal, and everyone develops for the console, so you buy the console, and plug it in, buy the game, put the game in and a portal opens, and you step in.
You are transfered to a virtual world, but its a virtual world thats real, its constantly being updated via the internet. So if something major happened, then the game could/might reflect that.
Say, you bought a racing game of some sort, a rallying game. You walk through the portal and are put in front of a console that you can select the options from. Like, "Feel Pain" and the likes.
You start your desired game, say it was a world championship or just some time trails, you are given a selection of cars to choose from, and you get in one, and slowly drive up to the start line. Now, say you knew nothing about rallying, well you would be given basic knowledge and you learn, when you save, your knowledge levels and skills are recorded so when you load that game back up, the computer programs the skills into you, so you don't have to learn them again.
Because the game is real, or in theory its real, you are allowed to feel certain emotions. Like, excitement, pain, love, enjoyment, and whatever the game lets you, because lets face it, you ain't gonna be much lovin' in a rally game are you now? So that emotion is discarded from the game.
You start the car, and listen to the sweet engine sound, and slowly drive up to the start line, you obviously have all your overalls and stuff on, and a co-pilot, and knowledge of listening to them and things like that. You start off in the rally and its great, its like being in a real rally car, well, you are in a real rally car, but you know how to use it.
There is no need to worry about graphics because they are all produced in the mind, and there is no slowdown or glitches. Nothing, its perfect. This new type of gaming allows people to be a rally driver, or be a top secret spy.
So say you had a MGS type game, which you need to have a knowledge of weapons, and you need to know how to be stealthy. So, you are given that knowledge, but, you don't have to use it, the game is non-liner so you do what you like, within the boundaries of the game.
So, your a MGS type of person, objectives are given to you through your radio which you were given at the "Equipment Post" and you know how to use it. So, this "Feel Pain" option, well, if you wanted to have the ultimate experience then you would select this option, and, say you were shot in the leg, well, you would bleed, well, you would see that you were bleeding, and feel the pain, so you would think that you had been shot. But, there are various "Med Points" dotted around the game so you can get help there (If you make it)
You get shot in the leg, and you are constantly losing blood, and your in so much pain just just think "I don't wanna do this.." so you just quit. And start from your last save. And thats what happens if you die, momentarily you think your dead, well, thats before you start again.
Control, which, is normally a very important aspect of console gaming, but ohh no, in portal gaming, you are the control, so if you stumble and fall, and you drop you gun and it make a noise which alerts some guards which makes you have to test out your running skills, or your trigger finger, then its your fault. You should of eaten some more food before the level shouldn't you?
There is also something which is included in only portal gaming, its fatigue. Sleep levels are not needed, you get tired, but thats from running or general doing stuff, but, there's always some sort of food in your backpack, always, but, you can get tired, which, will need you to think a lot more, because a wrong turn could lead you tired and away from objectives, which is not good.
So, think about this topic in the year 2317 when portal gaming is all the rage.
Remember, its all in the mind.

GasMask
A nice idea, more than just gaming, reality inside of a game. The idea of 'Portal Gaming' would be brilliant for people training to work in the Army and other jobs that need a lot of physical training.
Just imagine the experiences you could go through in your own home. Skydiving in the middle of the night, set to complete a military objective. Great mind opening idea GasMask.
Yea, it would be dangerous, but that why the people that make it, they would spend over 100 years perfecting it.
Surely actually doing it is a lot more fun, but obviously games like Half-Life would be impossible to do in real life...but, if you had a rally car pasrked outside your house I doubt you'd be looking to half-life for fun.
It's a good idea, but involving your mind into a game sounds dangerous, like being hypnotised, you don't know your there, if you had one in your home you probably wouldn't leave it.
An overload in half-life causing you to be stuck in the "Virtual" world :-D
Maybe they already are making this, but to iron out every bug and make it safe, compact, and affordable might take some time.
I was thinking about last night, and to go upstairs and be a rally driver for a few hours would be the best thing ever.
Dreams..
> Imagine this..
consoles no longer exist.......
.......There is only one console
huh??
anyway, I doubt it will be 300 years until something like this is made, scientists can already give false emotions to people on command, it's just a matter of time before it's put into action for the public.
It sounds great, but it's a bit exagerated, stepping into a portal? Would have thought it would be more likely to be put to sleep (or somthing) then you get plugs put on you and you play the game in your sleep (although, you might aswell dream) I hope you understand :)
Good idea though.
also don't you think there would be some kind of huge overload, they'd have to build these portals to the size of rooms if people are going to walk in and out of them (don't forget multiplayer) it would be quite a costly machine, and I doubt it would be avaliable to the public, maybe just at game shows and arcades.
But when something changes or is updated via the net, would we experience déja vu??? You know, like in The Matrix.
So, you have complete freedom, until the portal stops you :o)
Very clever eh?
