Firstly, when I say it “could” happen, it already is happening, well, kind of. Secondly, what am I on about? Some of you at this point will be jumping to conclusions; if you think I’m on about VR (or Virtual Reality), you’d be right (partly), if you think I’m on about new genres, you’d be right (partly), if you think I’m on about monkeys powering the entire world by riding banana fuelled bikes (you know, a banana hanging in front of an exercise bike), you need a psychiatrist.

When I say new genres, I don’t really mean a new type of game – more a new type of gaming. So far we have home console gaming, handheld and the arcade machines; but there’s something missing. There’s always been an empty space in gaming, but filling it was always one step away. A new gaming genre is what everyone has been waiting for. In gaming magazines and programmes alike, this new genre is being tested. So it can’t be too far away, can it?

Right, I still haven’t told you what it is yet. I mentioned VR before, and just to let you know, this post isn’t about VR. The tested genre I talked about before was VR, but there’s something better than VR that would fuel the gaming industry and give an edge that hasn’t been seen before. We’ve already seen examples of it in games like Luigi’s Mansion and Super Mario Sunshine; using pressure sensitive buttons to determine how powerful a blast of water, ice or fire will be. I remember always being told “Pressing the buttons harder won’t make any difference”, but this is what could change that.

It’s something I like to call Energy Gaming.

Admittedly, Mario Sunshine and Luigi’s Mansion don’t really use energy, but they’re examples of what could soon be used in a new genre of gaming.

Here are a few ideas of what could be used for different game genres:

Sports - When I thought of this post, the genre that first popped up into my mind was sport. There are some games where energy is needed - tapping buttons alternatively to run in an athletics game is something I remember too well. But now, with so much more technology, why not make gamers really sweat? Imagine, playing a running game and actually having a treadmill hooked up to your console, maybe multiplying your speed by however much and go up against real international running scores. It would be so much fun. Or what if you’re in a rowing race, while trying your hardest on a real rowing machine?
Okay, so for some of you these things will seem boring - this is where football comes in. We’ve already seen sensor pads being used and, depending on how hard you hit the ball, the ball will be hit as hard as you like. But what if you had an electronic football and some kind of pressing pad that moved with you. So not only could you do whatever you wanted while running around the field, but controlling the ball exactly. Imagine, a chance to use some of your own skill to confuse the A.I., it’d be brilliant.

Shoot-‘em-up - I think I might have actually seen a VR shoot-‘em-up in action before; either in a magazine on the TV, but it would really be an amazing experience. Get fixed up to a few wires and run around shooting people with an infa-red gun, what more can you ask for? Well how about having a huge room, with obstacles and all, get you VR goggles on, and have a deathmatch. Well that’s basically the same (okay, exactly the same), but hiding under a table until you opponent comes looking for you would be brilliant. Also something that could work is a small electric shock. No, not huge 1000 Volt one, more like something that won’t hurt, but it’ll indicate you’ve been shot (hopefully if this did happen this would be optional).
The techniques could be used for beat-‘em-up, obviously 2-Player games could be a bit dangerous, but for 1-Player it would be great.

Adventure/Platformer - FPA/P’s (First Person Adventure/Platformer) could well be created some day. This would probably end up as VR, but if Energy Gaming were used, it would be brilliant. Imagine watching some person strapped up to a machine with some VR goggles on jumping a high as he could in a game like Mario - desperately trying to reach a platform. The big problem with this would be the restricted room though, finding a huge room and not falling over things once in a while would be almost impossible, maybe a floor that moves beneath your feet (much like a treadmill) could work, but in the end I don’t think this would work too well. The only reason I added this genre is because it’s something I’ve always imagined would be amazing.

There are so many possibilities with Energy Gaming, but getting these possibilities to work is another matter. The future might not bring Energy Gaming, but Energy Gaming will bring the future, I can tell you that…

Thanks for reading
