I used to have windows 98 and when you shut down it switched off automatically, but now I have windows xp when I shut down it comes up with safe to shut down. and I have a standby button as my main switch on button so when I try and power off I cant Help how can you override the system so it can shut down automatically or is it because I have win xp proffesional which is designed for servers?

Yeah, I have this problem on Mum's new XP box. However, it's not a problem because I never actually turn it off (by choice, anyway).

I think win xp pro has a few little bugs in it, as i also have this problem but mine is intermittent, to turn it off you have to hold down power button for 3 seconds.

Hmmm, I'm not TOTALLY sure about this, but what I do know is that you have to mess around with the power settings. On the desktop, right-click and select Properties.
Then select the Screensavers tab and the power button should be at the bottom.

Oh, and XP Pro isn't designed for servers, just server clients. :)
