Personally I think this cuts out the work of a developer. The storyline doesnt make you wonder "whats coming next!?" because if you've seen the film, you already know. The developer doesnt think of an original idea, he (or she) sits at home on the sofa stuffing popcorn into their mouth and suddenly exclaiming "That would make a good game." I am not criticising the games that come from movies, some of them can be enjoyable and fun to play.
However I want to give a real life example. Braveheart, in my opinion, is one of the best films ever made. It has a compelling storyline and wonderful acting, not to mention amazing battle scenes. However the people, if htey deserve that title, butchered the game. It contains barely the skeleton of a storyline, poor animation and gameplay that makes eating cold beans from a tin seem fun. But, I bought the game, because I was a young naive movie fan, and then began the realisation. Developers dont actually care about our gameplay needs, they will put anything together using the name of a blockbuster movie to make their bank account swell, and the movie is all to happy to sell out.
But, I think the world is begining to see a turn around. If you look at the most popular games of all time, you'll see the Zelda's and Metal Gear Solid's, and these are all original games. The public, I hope, are not buying the games that use the titles of movies to make sales. They are been driven out of the market, and only the games of the movies that are any good are released.
I think there is a whole new revelation though, a new genre even. The big name movie developers are producing movies of games. This shows the sheer originality and quality of modern gaming and proves it is something to marvel at. Resident Evil and Final Fantasy are two that I am aware of, and I think there are more in Japan. Not to forget the huge sucess of the Pókemon movies worldwide! I hope this is the start of a whole new era for game-to-film creators. It is something I will be able to say to my grandchildren, "I was there, and I posted about it on the SR forums."
I thank you for reading.
