E-Mail is described by www.webopedia.com as:-
The transmission of messages over communications networks.
This means nothing to the average person but it is really just a complicated way of saying that E-mails are messages from one place to another through wires or electrical signals. As you all know this allows for extremely quick message or informatio delivery but what I am going to talk about is the information it can deliver.
For many years now people have been sending E-mails with viruses attached to them ready to strike when the E-mail is opened. www.webopedia.com descibes a Viruse as:-
A program or piece of code that is loaded onto your computer without your knowledge and runs against your wishes. This is a very straight forward description to take in but we have to ask our selves how do viruses come to be?
This question is a lot more easily answered than you would think. You see all Viruses are man made and dew to the fact that they can replicate themselves even the smallest Virus is a huge problem. Any Virus no matter how small will replicate itself over and over taking uo all the computer memory bringing the system to a stop. The more severe viruses however can transmit itself to other people by bypassing security systems.
Now the easiest way to not get an E-Mail virus would be not to open any suspicious mail you get but that is harder than it seems. An E-Mail with a Virus looks no different to your average junk mail and sometimes have some very attractive titles such as "I love you" or "Free Beer". This is why antivirus programs were created. An antivirus program is simply a utility that searches your hard disk for viruses and deletes them. Most of them also check incoming E-mails to make sure they have no viruses themselves. This gives you warning to what you are about to open.
In conclusion E-Mails make our lives what they are and without E-mails the world would have gigantic problems with communications but whether it is worth it or not is up to you. It is another situation in modern life were one person can spoil it for everyone else. I would finally like to thank www.webopedia.com for supplying me with some of this information so I could produce this report. I couldn't have made it quite as detailed with out them.
