We have all heard the points about how games are becoming more realistic and how maybe one day they could become realistic. Lets just look at these two points.
Yeah games have become more realistic but that is what most expect, we have gone from two blocks hitting a little square around and a little spaceship firing at very large aliens to games that allow you to drive realistic cars, games that allow you to sneak around a tanker taking on enemies, shooting them or even breaking their necks. As sweet as all this is these days we as gamers still want more realistic games.
There are a number of areas that I see becoming much more realistic very soon.
Characters actions. Characters in games behave at a basic level of realism. A.I isn't good enough yet to make totally realistic but this should improve with time and technology so who knows what is possible in the future. We could see characters that need to eat, drink, sleep, go to the toilet and generally behave like normal everyday humans. Whether we will see things like this all depends on what the developers and other gamers want.
Vehicles. A lot of the games based on the gamer controling a vehicle are at a high standard but there is room for improvement. But when is too far? Driving cars that require clutch control in manual mode, react differently in various weather conditions and behave depending on how much damage they have.
Violence and gore. With improving realism violence seems to always improve as well, more blood, ways of beating people and causing mayhem. But is this a good or bad thing? I guess it is all down to personal opinions and whether you like this genre of game. I think it could be better, I guess all parts of games could be better, we could see more realistic boxing and fighting games and violent games could be much better. But when they get better I am sure more and more people will call for it too be banned as they are too violent.
Weather effects. Weather effects could be a lot better, imagine realistic storms on the high sea, flooding, heavy snow and strong winds causing havok in any game. Driving games could be improved with the option of various weather conditions, black ice, snow, heavy rain, flooding and strong winds. Weather is something that has always been a little below standard in most games, probably due to the physics and how hard it would be to implement, but we are at a time when technology allows a large number of things to get better, hopefully weather effects will be one of them.
But will there be a time when games become to realistic? When the fun gets taken out of games as you have to do so many other things that side track you from the main story and aim of the game. I think realism is something that should be improved with time but I also believe there is a limit in most areas as to how good they should get.
Which is another thing we here a lot of on these forums, too realistic and the fun disappears. Well that isn't always the case but I guess it depends on you and also on the game as we are all different and have different tastes.
Ok well what I was thinking about earlier was how realistic games could one day get and to be honest I don't ever see them representing what we call "real life" they will never get that realistic, we will always be able to tell a game from real life. Why?
Well look at what is around you, everything real, how could "all" that and more be contained in a game? The way I see it is it can't well not in our lifetime anyway. It just seems so impossible to have everything possible included in the game and making everything behave and act as it should. Also if it did ever reach these standards then what would the point of it all be? Surely everything in the game would be possible in real life? Ok we may not have the fast cars and the weapons and all the situations to make them possible but would all this make it better for us gamers?
That is the question I leave you with.
> we don't want games to become too realistic because that would detract from the
> feeling of fantasy you get from playing videogames.
hhmm, if the graphics were 'too' realistic, it would be great! the whole point in games e.g. RPGs FPSs is to put you in a position you normally wouldn't be in, i'm pretty sure i'm not going to be fighting a war anytime soon on the moon, or killing gods with magic potions, thing is, the characters are made from pixels and polygons, on most games you can see this and you know it's a game.
*Ideal situation* =
The characters look so realistic you think of them as your own friends not just the character your playing's friendsm they help YOU not your character, it's YOUR mission to save the world...etc if your playing Asteroid, you don't think anything about it, blowing up outlined asteroids is nothing.
Whereas you play a game that looks like a famous landmark *like Rainbow 6* you think "hey, i've been there" and you instantly feel like a part of the game and enjoy it mor.
I believe i've gone on for long enough.
I don't think think people would buy a XBOX over a PS2, but yes the graphics are better on the XBOX and so are loading times, due to the massive power it has.
Thing is with the XBOX 'graphics' they look very impressive, very smooth characters and arenas, loads of detail and usually lots of things happening at the same time, yet no slow down.
The PS2 (I havn't really played on one) but i'm guessing it still has similar loading time to the PS1, I hated the loading bars on the PS1 reminded me of PCs, consoles are supposed to be:
*put game into console*
*play game*
PS1 =
*put game in console*
*wait for console to run Sony hardware*
*loads game*
*play game*
it's annoying, I could plug Goldeneye in and be playing within 20 seconds or so.
Thing is, the XBOX has had over a year to work on it's graphics, Sony released the PS2 so it wouldn't have to compete, they could charge £300 for the console, because it was the only 'next gen' console around and there wasn't going to be anything close to beating it for over a year.
That to me seems like a perfect situation.
Not so much about power and graphics, it has a huge variety of games.
Graphics aren't important, just wait until the next generation of consoles, they're going to be amazing, a step closer to what your topics about.
Honestly, i'd love to see consoles like these, you'd be working out at the same time as your whole bodys in motion not just your fingers and thumbs.
You can't expect too much from games, I think there trying to base
> future games mainly on storylines as graphics as so amazing at the moment, theres
> really no point in spending all your time improoving them.
You do have a point there but this made me think of something on the other side of the coin, again as usual it all comes down to money. Developers use the graphics to sell, take the xbox, claims to be the most powerfull and its graphics are a little better than its rivals but it is only a little, not a huge amount still people will buy it over the others just because it has slightly better graphics. This is why I think that given the chances most developers will always try improve the graphics as much as they can. Just to help sell the game.
Going on what you said though I do think developers have started to concentrate a lot more on the smaller areas as they are happy with the standard of graphics.
Making them run faster with more detail is also a good point.
But you can see how far games have come because of the A.I. some games are better than others, but when a game is released that:
- acts like a human (cowarding away, and telling other people to do the jobs, slowing right down around corners)
- moves like a human (smooth motions, all fingers moving, hair blowing in the wind..etc)
You can't expect too much from games, I think there trying to base future games mainly on storylines as graphics as so amazing at the moment, theres really no point in spending all your time improoving them.
btw great post AliBoy!
Another idea for more realistic gaming would be football
> games. Instead of managing a whole team, like reaL football, you could train up
> someone you made. Make a team on the internet.
I remember a PSX game think it was Libero Grande or something like that where you only controlled one player. It wasn't that good but maybe your idea could be quite useful, an on-line game where you control one player and others control others to make up your full team to play another team.
Thanks for your reply. :)
It's amazing how fast computer gaming gets better, as well. Look at gaming life ten years ago, so many boundaries that couldn't be passed.
I think the one problem with games when eating, sleeping and going to the toilet, would be like what you said. You will get sidetracked so much when needing the toilet, getting hungry and tired, you wouldn't progress as far as you normally would.

Also a think as more realistic games get, First Person view points will get more popular in different genres.
