Take it on a mate. I did so, my mate wants to kill himself, and chances are that when he does it on me, I'll be the same. Ask a friend to take it for you.

Ironic. We had a talk about suicide today in RE. Not exactly the best thing on a monday morning. Then we got asked the question:

"Do you think Euthenasia is right?"

Right in what way? Meh. RE teacher said it didn't matter anyway, as long as we got the Christian points of view studied.

Pah, a little human history tells you I've been in the depths of despair myself, been suicidal, and very nearly ended my own life. Looking back on what I used to justify such thoughts makes me feel contempt for myself. To think I was once that weak and pathetic is a bane on my memory, an undissolvable black stain on the carpetry which is my soul.

But then, we learn best from our own mistakes.

I know what being truly suicidal feels like. When you know, then you can lecture me. Until such time, allow me a little cynicysm.

I don't quite agree. My life is better now than it was only because I have a decent job and a wonderful girlfriend (when the mood suits :P). Many of the things which haunted me then still do so, in fact I probably have more to grieve about now than then. The reason I'm not suicidal is not because my life is turning into one inexhaustable bowl of cherries, but instead because I've learned to deal with life's adversaries in a mature and adult fashion. ie live with it rather than throw myself off a building.

It's not a hard mentality to develop, and maybe it does make me view the world with a somewhat skewed eye. But I'm alive, and I can honestly say to you that suicide is nothing more than running from problems you haven't the strength of character to confront.

Heh, my mate actually found it. He's been so depressed with bullying and all, and I checked and he's more likely to commit suicide in the next year or two.

Why do you have to be so sanctimonious and patronising all of the time?

You cannot decide whether someone is a suicide risk by asking one question. Yes, the quiz does repeat itself but it's based around much more than one question.

It sees whether the person in question has resources to cope in themself and around them. It sees if they have had to endure a traumatic event recently. And it sees whether they have access to a means to committ suicide. From that it gives someone a fairly accurate idea of whether or not their friend wants to kill themself.

People commit suicide when they perceive the painful things in their life to outweigh their resources to cope with them. (Not everyone has your aryan ideals and disdain for suicide.) This quiz might at least let someone know that they do need to pay closer attention to a friend, which will probably stop that person killing themself.

Personally, I don't think that suicide is ever justifiable, but I don't see it as a sign of weakness or cowardice, and I know what it feels like to feel so depressed that it seems to be the only option. The reason I think it's unjustifiable is because your life can always improve, even when it seems like it never will, and that's worth living for.
