Have you lot forgot about the MGS 2 DVD that you get with the game? As I have not heard all that much about it from you lot. Anyway, in a moment of boredom (as that’s what you get when all your lessons are cancelled at college) I decided to watch it, as it was safe since I had completed the game a view nights ago, and it is better to watch if you have finished the game. And what an enjoyable watch it was.

The first thing I realised after watching it was what a true genius I think Hideo is, as they interviewed him he gave and explanation about some of the cut scenes during the game that are all very well thought out, and it seems to me that I have totally miss judged what these cut scenes were meant to represent. There are more to them than just to unfold the story, they have hidden truths within them that you could only really understand if you watched them a few times, or hear from Hideo himself what they mean. After hearing what he said about them, I really feel I need to play through the game again to get the 'true' picture.

The main part of the DVD is based upon the making of it, with an interview mainly with Hideo but also other people on the work team, such as the art and music designers. Throughout it MGS 2 is dubbed 'The Hollywood game' and after watching the DVD, and seeing how much effort was put into the game you can really see why this is. Everything about the game has a meaning, and this is all explained in this.

One good thing about the DVD is that it clears up parts of the plot that you may not have understood, it lets you know exactly what Hideo's feelings were about the scene and so on. It also tells you about things that were missing, such as that there would have been another character 'The Chinaman' in the game had there been enough time, he would have been part of Dead Cell and have some special powers such as running on water, but as they didn’t have enough time, some of his powers went to Vamp. There are also some detailed explanations behind the making of the characters physique and personality and changes they had to make through the production, such as the fact that Vamp was originally planned to be a woman, until Fortune was scripted in. But there was too much to write here, and your better off watching the DVD yourself.

There are also many other things on the DVD too, such as a gallery mode where you can look at some of the artwork that had been drawn before hand. A biography mode where you can read about the people behind the game, and also one of my favourite sections, the trailer mode. Here as you can guess are many trailers that have been in adverts and some that were shown at E3, all of them are great and really give you the sense that the game was actually a film.

It really is a DVD that has to be watched if you want to fully understand the ethics behind MGS 2, and its not boring at all. One of the best moments that I heard was that the actual level layout of the tanker and oil plant was that they were first made from Lego. The DVD really gives you a glimpse of what it took to make the game so realistic and atmospheric, and give you and incite to the amount of detail that was put in. And the best thing was that after the hour long 'making of' was that Hideo is by no means ruling out a MGS 3.

Watch it..Now!

Fantastic game, but I would have liked to play those

In the making of thing on the extra dvd Hideo Kojima explains that he took the Snake running from the water bit out beacuse although the PS2 could handle it he said it wasn't any fun. That all you had to do was run and if the water caught you up you died gameover. I don't know about the other bits but the fight with the harrier is still great even if it's not on the bridge.

That sure was something wasnt it, just that tiny little amount of extra detail must have took sometime to do so.

Probably wasn't feasible hence not in the game, maybe there could have been a special edition MGS game which had them features in instead?

I particuallly like the links with Titanic. I never really noticed the fact that the ship sinks, Raidens name is Jack, and his girlfriends name is Rose,

They showed early scenes of snake on the tanker with the rain effects as well. I can't believe how much they have improved it.

ahh, too true. Inspirational infact!

I nearly started rambling about "character design in MGS2" in my uni interview today. That would've been fun, but perhaps cost me my potential place.
