For example MGS2 has had a huge amount of hype and yet there is such a mixed response from people-was all the hype worth it...well no not really is mostly the case.
I think that the only reason the developers hold back the release dates is to create hype and therefore publisise their games.
If games were really that great the developers wouldnt need to hold the games back. A truly good game should be able to come and just sweep the sales.
Are all these games worth getting so excited over? It's not like they won't come out eventually anyway. Meanwhile instead of waiting for these games to come out and not bothering to get anymore games 'cos you're worried you'll spend all your money, you could blow all your money on other recent titles.
This same senario happened to me during the MGS2 hype I saved for ages and got sick of the wait so I spent my money soon after the game came out I wasn't that bothered about buying it that much.
What do you lot think?
It makes sense for publishers to promote their games as early as possible. I for one know that I will be getting the latest Toca and Colin Mcrae games later this year and will plan what else I buy with this in mind. When publishers have games like this coming out they need us to know about it to help push up the sales.
PS2 back in stock
Better act quick
They're going fast
Im sure that was 'part' of the plan too as it makes perfect sense with the amount of copies of that game that has been sold, and many people were actually buying a PS2 for this game.
We did get a lot of nice extra features though.
Personally, i dont like waiting ages for a really good game only for it to be delayed a week before the day, nor do i think anyone else does. But there really is nothing much that we can do about it, we can only buy it when its out the shelf.
Hype. Thats a different kettle of fish. At times hype can effect the way we see a game when its released badly, MGS 2 showed some signs of this as not everyone thought it was as good as the hype made out. Hype is not needed to sell games either, a common example is the likes of GTA 3. This game had little hype arounds its release and was one of the biggest sellers of the year. Adverts for the game only came after its biggest selling spree.
