He glanced at his wristwatch there was one minute of waiting left then the attack started. He started to count down the seconds 50, 40, 30, 20 time to pick his target he guessed the time was near.
Suddenly from below the dozens of rifles and the machine spat its hate at the trucks going past. The first truck stopped and the well trained Waffen SS, jumped out most fell straight away but a few got into the cover of the wrecked buildings.
John fired his first shot, the bullet hit the driver of the second truck in his head. Blood flew up the windscreen. The truck carried forward and rammed the back of the first.
Out of the third truck came a mounted machine gun. Taking his aim once more john shoot dead the first two crew members, the last lost his nerve and fled.
Down below the Lewis gunners were shooting at the Waffen SS that had managed to find some cover.
“Shoot low, pick your man” roared the captain over the noise of the gunfire. The loader and spotter for the Lewis gun spotted a group of the German pointing a rocket launcher at there direction. Banging the gunner on the right side of his helmet and pointing. The gunner poured a blast of bullets into the group. All of they fell limply to the ground.
“Thanks” the gunner, shouted over the noise.
Back up above john had seen a another a truck load of Waffen SS swing into view. Grabbing the radio his sent a hurried message down below. The Lewis gun and crew came running up the stairs. John admired the speed in which they re positioned the gun so it could rain down fire on to the reinforcements. John picked his man and fired, only three shots were needed as the Lewis gun had down the work.
With in a few minutes all was silent, the dim and smoke of the battle drifted on to the air to a distant place.
The squad met down stairs.
“Well done men, we gave the Hun a damn good thrashing,” said the captain.
They were all pleased about the victory small as it was.
“Right, to Berlin and on to victory” shouted one of the newer privates.
And with that the squad left. Leaving the battle far behind.
