In answer to the views on arcades dying the problem is that the arcades haven’t evolved for a long time, all we have seen is new games on the old format, better graphics faster more fluid action, the problem is it is nothing better than what is available at home in terms of freshness and gameplay. SEGA have now started 9 new splinter groups, SEGA Rosso is developing an idea that arcades should be networked in some way, this will ultimately result in Dreamcast’s being networked to Arcades. So it sounds as if SEGA has some high hopes for the arcade. They realise that the arcade is in decline, and they need to do something radical in order to save it but a problem could be that people can be intimidated by arcades, muggings and rowdy youths populate many of the arcades near me which puts a lot of people off of using them. The most important factor is SEGA have started to develop a few titles, NASCAR and Cosmic Smash just two that they are hoping will inject some life into the tired and lethargic arcade. The fact that they sold there boards only means they were saving costs instead of making boards they will now only make the games, this move might well be a saving grace for SEGA as they attempt to reclaim the esteem their once mighty name held.
