If I was to ask you, what kind of image are a lot of computer games trying to show. you would probably say a proggressive one, one of evolution and occasionaly, revolution but nowadays, it seems that instead of evolving games, computer games nowadays are de-volving. Of course you have your retro arcade purists, but they deny the fact that computer games have progressed, and surprisingly, game developers seem to be taking this point of view. Old Skool is a complimentary adjective, used to describe something, back in the past, simpler, yet brilliant. The fact is, old skool has become the new school and it seems as though proggressive gaming was a thing of the past.

For my first case study, I bring to view that of the recentish Return To Castle wolfenstein for the personal computer. It was eagerly awaited for it was to be the p.c's saviour, bringing first person shooting back to its home, away from the console market. Everyone knew that it wasnt going to turn F.P.S's on their heads, such as deus ex did, but nobody knew that It would be a step backwards to the days of the oringinal Wolfenstein 3D. When it came out, the cover proudly claimed that it was the successor To WOLFENSTEIN 3D but infact all the game did was try to suck up to the classic, offering standard gameplay and ditching many modern F.P.S features, such as using tactics. What actually made wolfenstein good at the time, was the fact that it was one of the few F.P.S's that there were available aside from DOOM, and surprisingly, everyone lapped the new spin-off up."The most important game of the year" Claimed P.C Gamer, actually, it was the most important game of the year, more than 10 years ago. Why do games try to suck up to the past, when gaming has gotten so much further than this.

We see millions of tetris clones, but why? Because the first was a brilliant and innovative success? Spewing out the same game with colour and maybe even adding a new block and giving 3d backgrounds, eving giving an orchestral soundtrack, is blasphemy and it doesn't even pretend that it they are tying to be the same game that tetris was when it came out, When tetris came out, what made it great was the music, playing your friend and the fact that it was original we don't want it again now that weve already got it.

Finally, I bring to attention two games, and these are the worst offenders of them all, these are the game boy advance games made by nintendo, in which you play 6 oldskool game+watch games, and the konami arcade remakes for the gamecube, and n64, these are shameless, money grabbing rip offs, is this the future of gaming? Is this what we want to spend our £40 on? The number of these types of games are increasing, and the gaming markets got to find something new to restore at least some originality back into gaming, not these lazy ports that de-colve computer games.

I am not saying that this applies to all games, there are still good games out there, and some original, heck i don't even mind the unoriginal ones, but what i do mind, are the constantly increasing number of games that go backwards.
