It seems that you can't watch a movie or TV program, read a book or play a game without encountering some super special twist ending. Which wouldn't be bad thing, except that many of them you can see coming a mile off. I'm not going to name any particular movies for fear of ruining them for people, but more often than not there are honking great signs that scream 'Hay, this is the big twist'. The good thing about a twist ending is that you can go back and pick up on the odd clue here and there, but some directors make these clues so massive and obtrusive you're in no doubt as to what's going on.

But that's not the only way a twist ending can be messed up, either. There are other movies where the director decides to add a 'surprise' ending that makes absolutely no sense when placed in context with the rest of the movie. As if it had been tagged on as an afterthought. So you can't go back and look for clues because they simply aren't there. And it's not really a surprise when you're expecting a twist in the first place - which, with the exception of his most recent film, applies to every damn M. Night Shyamalan film ever.

And it's a fad that's spreading. More and more directors and writers seem to adding twist endings to their movies, books or TV shows without actualy thinking whether they add anything to the production. I'd be perfectly happy just to have them going back to making straight stories. That way, if they ever add a twist ending at some point, it would be a surprise, not just the norm.

SURPRISE TWIST: I am in fact M. Night Shyamalan

SUPER SURPRISE TWIST: No I'm not. But I am in fact a ghost. Bet you didn't see that coming, eh?

To Hannard:

You knew there was a twist and was looking out for it. I meant that nobody would guess if they didnt know there was going to be one.

I suspect Shamamalanman won't put a twist in his new film, whatever it's called, and that in itself will be the twist.

So there, I've gone and ruined the whole thing.

The only twist in a film that has ever wowed me would probably be Saw. Not the second, the first.

Looking forward to Saw3 coming to a cinema near you October 31st; Halloween :-D

Cobblers. I got the twist as soon as I heard there *was* a twist. I thought about the nature of the movie, then bingo, got it. I had it confirmed the moment I saw the first scene with Willis's character and his wife. Apparently, though, the kid who plays the psychic kid in the movie actually gave away the twist live on some chat show or other. The daft get.

Anyone who thinks they guessed the end of 6th sense is a dirty lier. You could sort of see where signs was heading and the village and unbreakable were both a bit rubbish.

The problem is that after the success of the 6th sense people expected a twist and were looking for clues.

SHOCK TWIST: I guessed the end of 6th sense!!!

SUPER SHOCK TWIST: I didnt really, but I did notice that he was wearing the same shirt several months after he was shot. I was sooo close to guessing what was going on.
