I hadn't listened to that in god knows how long, so I stuck it on again.
And all the memories came flooding back from hearing that at college and getting into FNM big time.
I forgot just how superb this band are, and one of the most original "rock" bands I've heard in a loooong time.
Patton's voice is nasal and odd on this one, and I thought that was how he always sang.
Epic was the 1st track I ever heard and bought the album, I remember now from Parrot Records in Harlow, an indie record store that I lived in whilst being a student in...christ..89-91...I'm ancient.
Underwater Love, The Morning After, From Out of Nowhere...all absolutely superb songs, can't believe I left it this long without listening to them.
Songs about drowning a loved one (Underwater Love), waking up next to a dead person (The Morning After), paedophilia (Edge of The World) and other charming songs.
That's the thing about FNM, Mike Patton writes about the most screwed up stuff but it sounds so upbeat and singalong that by the time you realise what you're singing, it's too late, you're just as guilty.
And then I took out Angel Dust, the follow up and it's so far removed from the funk/rock label as to almost sound like a different band altogether.
Patton dropped the whiny voice and settled for his usual style of excellent singing/scat/screaming/throat noises, but still perfecto songs that could only be Faith No More.
Midlife Crisis, Crack Hitler, Jizzlobber, Caffeine and the best song ever written about homosexual fellatio (Be Aggresive).
It was written by Roddy Bottom, the keyboard player and one of the 1st rock-stars to come out and admit being gay, in a musical genre where that just doesn't happen.
"Tall and reckless
Ugly seed
Reach down my throat
You filthy bird
That's all I need
The empty pit
I've got to feed
To prove I'm fit
A healthy man
I've got to be
Malnutrition, my submission
You're the master and I take it on my knees
Ejaculation
Tribulation
I SWALLOW, I SWALLOW, I SWALLOW, I SWALLOW "
And then my fav album "King For a Day".
Evidence, the smoothest song they've ever done as well as one that sounds like Tom Jones (Star AD), one sung in Portuguese and one they call their "Queen song" (Just a Man).
If you like fantastic music coupled with a nasty sense of humour and twisted imagery, then Faith No More should be on your shopping list.
Oh, and they did that cover of "Easy Like Sunday Morning" that got to number 3.
And the video was them with a load of transvestites in a flat in North London.
Even when they are sincere, they like to take a sneaky left-turn.
Faith No More - Excellent.
