Now this got me thinking, just how many movies are out there with 'Cop' in the title? Sure there are the obvious ones, the Robocops, the Kindergarden Cop, Timecop and Beverly Hills Cop, but just how many more are there?
I discovered a whole new world of 'cop' movies, enough to make *cop it's very own genre!
I've discovered some movies with great titles, but been able to find no information on them, such as "Ghost Cop", "The Fly Cop", "Banana Cop" and 'Prostitute Cop'.
The early years brought us some typical titles for Cop movies, like 'Traffic Cop' and 'Female Cop' but soon enough, it seems things had to go a little cross genre. Yep, we had 'Cowboy Cop'.
This was just the start in a long line of cross genre cop movies, no doubt all of the highest quality.
Maniac Cop is an action, crime, horror, thriller, in which a man in a cop's uniform starts killing people for no apparent reason. It had 2 sequels.
Psycho Cop seems to be in a similar vein, a film in which students on a weekend vacation are, one at a time, humiliated and killed. This too, I believe, spawned a sequel.
Lots more horror movies too, including 'Vampire Cop', 'Demon cop' and 'Zombie Cop'. 'Zombie Cop' appears the best of this trilogy, telling the tale of a cop rising from the dead to enlist old cop buddies to stop a mad zombie priest, as they previously killed each other.
'Karate Cop' mixing crime and Kung-Fu "in a future dominated by terroristic martial-arts gangs who fight gladiator-style in arenas." That's a real quote from IMDB, I'm not making this up!
I just spotted 'Scanner Cop' on the list. I remember seeing 'Scanners' about someone that could stare at you, and make your head explode. Like that, only with a cop!
There's a great movie listed, unfortunately, no info 'Snuff Cop'. I cannot imagine what that can be about, though I doubt it's anything like 'Siamese Cop' which i also have no information on. I see that one as a set of siamese twins, joined at the head, or something, fighting crime - and each other's different styles! (Maybe it's subtitle could be Cop and a Half - even if it already is a movie).
I wish I had more info on all of these *cop movies, the sheer number of them has shocked me, and I long to know what a movie called Banana Cop could possibly be about.
What does the future hold for *cop movies? Well coming this Christmas is 'A Christmas Cop' quoted as being "An Action/Comedy take, within the Mob genre, on the classic Dickens' story" starring Michael Madsen, so it's a genre packed with star quality, and sure to grow. In the future we could see other classics have a *cop turn, maybe 'Far From the Madding Cop' based on the similarly titled Thomas Hardy novel, or William Shakespeare's 'Cop of Venice'.
Maybe some of our favourite movie will get a *cop revival? Highlander Cop sounds very possible, maybe even MAtrix Cop, and who wouldn't want to see The Erotic cop Project? (Female cops, obviously)
Anyway, I think I've said enough, but next time you're checking out TV listings, check Channel 5 for a *cop movie, check the shelves of your local video store for *cop movies. You'll be shocked at some of the discoveries!
You're right though. You can make a film about anything at all, just put cop at the end.
