Oh yes indeedy, the hour of X is almost upon us.
And I can hear the cries and gnashing of teeth from those that don't like Microsoft (read: Kids that can't afford an Xbox) bemoaning "Evil Gates", whilst using Windows to type how much they hate microsoft..IRONY IRONY IRONY IRONY.
This time tomorrow, thousands of homes will have a massive black box in their home, playing Halo and ...er...the other games.
"Xbox sucks!" is the cry.
"It's not out yet, how do you know?" is the response.
"Waaaaaaah" is the retort.
Xbox is here, get used to it.
I've heard to complaints against it and, quite frankly, they're rubbish.
"The controller is too hard to handle".
Not if you have opposable thumbs and adult hands it's not. No more bulky than the N64 monster thing with those stupid, stupid little yellow buttons that you couldn't reach with any fingers whilst holding it.
Sony have the best controller, it's a fact. Perfectly designed and comfortable. And you don't have to pay another £15 for a rumblepack. So smoke that.
I've played with the Xbox controller and I found it to be comfortable, ergonomically designed and easy to reach all the buttons. But then I can also grip tools and open doors, so maybe I have a headstart?
"The games are rubbish"
No, they're not.
Halo rules. Microsoft have an unparalleled history with FPS on the PC.
No console FPS has been able to match a PC game for graphics, controls method (W,S,A,D) and mouse to look or imagination.
"Goldeneye!!!". Well if that's the best argument then you already beat, because PC/Microsoft babies have Half-Life, Medal of Honour, Castle Wolfenstein, Flashpoint etc etc etc.
Launch games are never that brilliant or the choice the greatest.
Look at the PS2:
SSX, Tekken Tag and a couple of others. But now the PS2 is the Don.
Xbox has Halo as it's main cannon.
And before the Ninty's (because let's face it, the loudest squeals are from that camp), Halo beats Goldeneye and Perfect Dark without question. So your best FPS just got owned.
"It's too big"
No it isn't.
It's the right size for housing the components.
And more to the point, it bloody looks like it cost £299, which is what I want for my money.
The PS2 is bulky, but it looks excellent.
The Xbox looks like a behemoth machine, and it is.
If you complain you can't fit it in your room, then maybe you should sell your cabin bed and get a grown-ups boudoir.
Just face it, Microsoft have done good.
And I haven't heard one single argument why they are "evil" etc, except it's trendy to say that.
But I promise you that you're using Windows and probably explorer to write your thoughts.
So stop for a second and install Linux.
There is a choice, but you choose not to.
Same with the Xbox, nobody is forcing you to get one.
You're happy with the Gamecube? Good for you, let's compare when it's released in 2 months time.
But in the meantime, calm down, take a breath and wipe your nose kids, because the Xbox is here and there ain't a goddamn thing you can do about it except cry and luz yer toys about.
Now run along and play some fluffy pink game with magic coins and pixies and let the grown-ups enjoy their games.
Excellent.
>Gamecube is Adam Sandler - amusing and for the simple.
LOL!! :D
Anyway, I agree Goatie, I'd prefer the X-Box to a GC. Also, isn;t Star Wars: Obi-Wan a release game? That looks pretty damn good.
I don't have the money, I guess I'll just try and win one from somewhere. {:)
Haven't tried a controller yet, will do tomorrow, but I doubt it's better than the almost perfect PS2 controller.
> I just wish I had enough money to buy one.
Anyone fancy buying a second hand
> PS2 off me?
If you wanna get rid of your PS2, maybe you should try e-bay or something, or even look at what you can get for a trade in.
This was saying that the Xbox will succeed despite hissy fits from Ninty's, because enough PC owners and other non-biased gamers realise the potential of Microsoft using 3rd party developers other than Rare and Square.
Gamecube is alright if you're a Ninty, I'm not therefore I don't want one.
However, my lack of interest stems from owning an N64, so at least I am coming from somewhere of experience and not just trendy "It'll blow" direction.
Whether I was right or not, I felt conned by Nintendo with the N64, yet I felt supported by Sony with the PS2 being backwards compatible, sort of "You can still play the old games as a thanks".
Well said Goatboy. I like the PS2 controller, but when it comes to FPS games where your using both analogue sticks, I found the X-Box controller more comfatable with that extra space between them.
PS2 is Steve Buscemi - Cult, cool and generally odd looking
Gamecube is Adam Sandler - amusing and for the simple.
Xbox is Maximus for Gladiator - Man console with extra man.
Anyone fancy buying a second hand PS2 off me?
> And there aint a damn thing you can do
Yes there is. I'm off work sick, so I can dance around in my pants, should I so desire.
Anywho, back to the issue in hand.
The controller isn't that comfortable when attached to a pod. It's at a slightly off angle. Most peopel playing on a pod, won't be convinced by it.
It's different, and will take some gettign used to, but if the games are good enough, it's hardly going to stop you.
It is huge, but again, it's not really an issue.
My question is are the games good enough?
Maybe for some people, but I haven't seen enough to make me want one.
A great FPS, an apparently great racer which I didn't like. Yeah it'll appeal to a lot of people, but I'm not one of them.
When I see clips of Nintendo games, more often than not, they make me smile. When I see the Xbox games they look good, just not anything different.
But since when did originality sell anything? Microsoft know what they're doing, and if enough people buy it, developers will soon enough get a decent variety of games to it.
But the rest of your post couldn't be closer to the truth.
