It has been said before, Capcom did it for a quick buck, releasing 3 identical games to one's on the Dreamcast and Playstation 2 is a disgrace. Resident Evil 2 and 3 are brilliant games as is Resident Evil Code Veronica X (I should know I just completed it :D) but these are pathetic ports. Resident Evil Code: Veronica X is the only one I will let off the hook, as it is already a next generation game. But Resident Evil 2 and 3 have no reason to be there, they are simple ports and will make some money and all Capcom have done is shifted systems. Resident Evil 3 has never appeared on any Nintendo console and fans of the series and Nintendo such as myself wouldn't have had the pleasure of this storming game and so Capcom can release it will no fear that it won't sell (I will hang my head in shame as I will also be buying Resident Evil 3).
Capcom's shock decision meanwhile couldn't have been effected by this fact though, Resident evil 1 is having a lot of time spent on it and it is looking very good, Resident Evil 4 is also in the works, both of these could have appeared on the PS2 and made millions but they haven't and this shows that Capcom are on the Gamecube for some other reason rather than a quick buck. It is said a huge suitcase filled with cash from Nintendo swayed the balance, but this has been frequently denied and although it won't happen it was once said, Capcom may have to reconsider the franchise staying with Nintendo, and if that is so then Nintendo couldn't have paid Capcom anything or Capcom wouldn’t have any choice but to stick with the Gamecube.
One Theory presented from NGC magazine follows the exploits of the Resident Evil designer. Capcom gave millions of dollars and assistance to the man behind Onimusha a game that turned out not too good. Whilst Shinji the guy behind Resident Evil had to spend months selling Resident Evil to the Capcom boss before he finally gave in. The same applies with Devil May Cry and Dino Crisis. The fact is Shinji could well feel held back by Capcom and may be looking for a new home, possibly with Nintendo. If he can impress and work closely with the Big N maybe they will offer him a job and maybe he already plans to leave Capcom for Nintendo... Who knows but bringing his number one series out on the Gamecube is surly a sign of some sort. But if he plans to jump ship then why is there no sign of Dino Crisis on the Gamecube or Devil May Cry?
As regards Resident Evil 4 meanwhile a far more down to earth explanation has been presented. The PS2 is hard to work on and Shinji has said it. Resident Evil 4 was said to be in some difficulty but no one really new the extent of which. If Capcom couldn't make the game filled with brilliant ideas on the PS2 maybe they should look to other formats. Which is what I believe. I believe that as Capcom were releasing a Gamecube only Resident Evil 0 then they should release Resident Evil 1 as well so we can make sense of it all, and with Resident Evil 1 coming first Resident Evil 0 would be far more interesting showing some of the mysteries that we never knew. After finding it too hard to develop Resident Evil 4 for the PS2 they decided to ship it to Gamecube, now with RE1, 0 and 4 all Gamecube bound, the next likely move is to release the other 3 games so RE4 makes sense. If you are looking on the positive side then you can see Capcom making sure that we aren't missing any chapters and so we RE4 can make sense. Negative meanwhile involves Capcom making 3 ports so they can cash in on the other 3 "NEW" titles as well as the movie.
But if Resident Evil 4 really was to hard to make on the PS2 then surly the x-box would be a better choice rather than the Gamecube? What do you think is the reason for the Resident Evil switch?
Dringo.
Nintendo want to shake off the 'kiddy' image (rightly or wrongly, they have it - that's indesputable).
So, they hand Capcom a big wad of cash and say "make us some exclusive Resident Evil games, please."
Shinji Mikami is quoted in many sources as saying that he wanted to have all Resi games available on one system.
But I think we can pretty much discount that, because - logically - that system should have been PS2.
All of the existing games were already available on PS2, because it plays PS1 games. Hence there would be no need to invest in re-making Resi 1 - Resi's 2 and 3 are going to be identical to the PS1 games anyway.
It would have been easier and cheaper to simply create Resi 0 and Resi 4 for PS2, negating remakes of all the others on another patform, and keeping all the titles on one platform.
I also question that the switch was due to PS2 'difficulties' because the same company had no problems with Onimusha, Onimusha 2 or Devil May Cry.
So the only logical reason for the switch, in my opinion, is money.
But why Nintendo?
Well look at their recent relationship, Nintendo gave Capcom the chance to have a go at Gameboy Zelda. That's a pretty big carrot to hold in front of any ones face, isn't it?
"Go on, do us the Resident Evil games, go on. We'll let you develop a couple of Zelda games...."
Come on, which developer would say 'no' to that opportunity?
