Hype. One word and it's destroying our gaming industry. Here's the basic routine:
1) A company reveals secrets of a new project.
2) The magazines and websites charge in, previewing and interviewing like crazy.
3) People read these previews and interviews and go crazy.
4) There are ten thousand articles in papers, magazines and on websites talking about how it's the best game ever and all the usual s**t.
5) People ( most of are now crazy for the game) post hundreds of thousands of things on places like Special Reserve on how peole suck if they are not going to buy it and how it is going to suck and they are weirdos ( not really) etc.
6) The company announces the release date and people start planning raids of the local Electronics Boutique.
7) The game is released.
8) Yet again the game 'apparently' breaks all records of sales and money made.
9) Games stores open on a happy new day only to discover that there are several hundred unhappy gamers sqwarking about refunds and disappointment of their purchases.
10) Once again it's another perfectly alright game spoiled by people expecting far too much of these poor developers turning out another highly anticipated piece of software.
Well, if you've actually got a long enough attention span to read this far then you probably feel the same as me or... you're just reading because I've recently won my first GAD and you want to pick holes in it incase it happens again ( you nasty b****r!) Hype, it spoils games in a way that racism and price can't contend with. If you don't understand what I mean when I say that, read on...
A game is on average not bad. There are amazing ones ( MGS2 and GTA: Vice City which have survived the hype) and ones which are a waste of money ( Britney's dance beat etc.) which didn't even get a hype. If people expect too much of a game then if it is not as good as thought to be then it is immediately dismissed as a rip off a couple of days after release and all because of the game-destroying hype. Not every game is spoiled, I'll admit. But, I think the message clear in this topic: don't expect too much of a poor little game. It can't always live up to peolple's expectations. Is this too long? Well, if you think it is then I'm sorry as I have adopted the El blokey way to post. ( I'm still voting for RM18 or whatever his name is. Or maybe Gerrid...)
Well... I can't really think of anything else to say. If I have missed anything out then please post below... (or above, depending on which one you're reading)
P.S. If you think this is better suited to chat then please tell me.
