Anyone remember when Mario was first seen in Donkey Kong? Imagine it, a fat Italian plumber who can jump, run and get power-ups all in order to saw a damsel in distress. It was Marios arival that marked the beginning of Shigeru Miyamoto's career as an games designer, and it was this game that made Nintendo the biggest name by far in the 8-bit era.
Then came the 16-bit era. Nintendo got off to a cracking start, giving gamers masterpieces like Zelda, Super Mario World and Super Metroid. What could be done to stop Nintendo's market domination. Simple, create a fast, thin, cool Hedgehog to compete against Nintendo's slow, fat, boring old plumber. After this, Mega Drive sales rocketed, and Sega too became a big player. Sony followed suit with the (less successful) Crash Bandicoot, and Lara Croft who is one of the most recognisable characters ever.
But now we are left with four players in the market. Sega use their Sonic mascot to regain their cool image- a tactic that has so far been successful in America. Nintendo have once again gone with Mario, Ling and Samus Arron. But what about Sony? It's PS2 has no image. Whereas the Playstaion was seen to be a cool console sporting figures like lara croft's the PS" has yet to muster this sort of image. And as for the Xbox- where's Microsoft's version of Mario? A brand with no mascot is one without identity... work it out Sony and Microsoft!

(GET IT AWAY!!! AWAY WITH YOU!!! BAHHH!!!)
(Sometimes Grix gets carried away...)
(This is what ruined the N64 right from the start actually, Mario being the ONLY game for the N64 for far too long, and consoles being returned in Japan... It was a damn shame, and very stupid of Nintendo. Hopefully they would have learned from this, and give us loads of GREAT games for the line up.)
Notice the use of the word, "GREAT".
