The list of good games goes back to when pong and space invaders were extremely popular. Time changed to consoles when atari hit the shelfs and later on nintendo and sega began the console wars. Once again technology improved and the playstation was released and began a great period of gaming. After this the next generation games took control and are still doing so. With such great ancestral history, how can game designers of today create bad games ?

The early gaming era

In the period of 1975-1980 something hit the hippie generation which has not left the tree hugging swingers the same again since. It was called 2-D gaming. It was a killer. It ate brain cells and made chaining yourself to a tree hard to fit in to your schedule. Some of the best of these games were called Pong and Space Invaders. To the more modern, sophisticated eye this will startle and shock some New-Gen gamers who expect a control pad to respond every time you hit it, unlike the sweaty palmed year of 79’!
After plenty of gaming this new race of gameaholics wanted more better, bigger and in depth gaming.
Soon the Atari was released and not so long after the speccy. It was like having a home P.C if you like, with different more contrasted game play and overall experience, the thrill of putting a new game cartridge in the system was a joy that will remain in our hearts.
Keywords: Hippies, 2-D, Frustrating game pads.

The 8 and 16 bit console era

The Thrill and excitement of the mid 80’s was muffled by two corporate icons which still influence games being developed today. There names : Mario and Sonic. Nintendo will always be remembered by mario. But there were other classic titles such as the infamous final fantasy series. Unfortunately most of these earlier editions were not released in Europe. Megaman did not go on to have a great future in the big world of 32 and 64 bit gaming unlike other big titles which was successful in future years. But on Nes grounds Megaman was a great side scrolling platformer. Metal Gear and Solid Snake for instance did not really capture the gaming hearts but we all no what lay in store for Snake in the future years. The real star at the end of the day was a fat plumber called mario and his Italian compatriot luigi. Without going into detail mario was and still probably is the most popular figure in gaming history.
The sega was popular for its never ending list of hockey games and of course sonic, whilst nintendo had a never ending list of great, variable and popular games. This was the first real console wars, which there was only going to be one winner. Sega released the mega drive in november 1990, nintendo rose to the task and brought out the Super nintendo. The mega drive had some great games like sonic 1,2 and another legion of hockey games. The super nintendo however, brought out some brilliant games like super mario world and super mario all-stars. Mario brought some more brilliant titles to the system like the infamous mario kart which created hours of multi-player fun. On the topic of multi-player fun, bomber man touched me, and I was soon hooked. Donkey kong, star fox and mortal kombat are again some classic and extremely playable games. This era was different for me, I was took back by the atari and speccy years but it was nowhere near the way the super nintendo grabbed me. A more addicted, style of gaming was created, the 16 bit console era was truly a fine one.
Keywords: Mario, Sonic, bottomless pit of hockey games.

The 32 and 64 bit gaming era

Before the star-struck gaming fans could blink a new system was created. It wasn’t created by Nintendo or Sega, it was created by an electronics giant, Sony. If people were excited over the earlier 16-bit technology then this stunning innovating experience would blow away any gamer. The sony playstation was released in 1994 in Japan, 1995 in U.S and finally 1996 in Europe. From what was mario was now called crash bandicoot. Street Fighter was called Tekken. And number 6 was number 7, final fantasy I mean.
The RPG experience was once again reanimated and the use of the new technology was astounding and it created a new league of gaming fans. The resident evil series also brought out more fans. It was the first real time that a game was scary or tense and the public loved the atmosphere. Amongst the early games was Grand Theft Auto. It was popular in a way, but it never come close to the ground breaking heights that its Next –Gen brother did/will. When the smoke of the fantastic playstation cleared there was a tall, dark figure standing in the debris, his name was Solid Snake.
Metal Gear Solid was another innovative game that spawned bundles of clones including the syphon filter series, which I personally think, is better than the MGS series. Metal Gear Solid was about stealth and strategy, creeping around not being seen. Perhaps the story line was to far strung for some, but it added atmosphere which gamers love.
Racing games were now popular with such games as Gran Turismo and Colin McRae. Tomb raider, driver, Tony Hawks are all other popular titles.
In 1998 nintendo released 64 and after that sega released the dreamcast but despite being powerful than the playstation they could never pull of the feats. Sonys machine could. Just like a boring magic show the playstaion kept bringing out the same tricks so sony produced a new machine.
Keywords: games on a disc, innovative games.

Next-Gen gaming era

The first next generation console to be released was the playstion 2. It has and is producing some great games. Gran turismo, Final Fantasy, Resident evil, Tekken, Tombraider, GTA and MGS are making impressive jumps from the past machine, with some great results. Some newcomers are Timesplitters, Pro Evolution soccer, Hitman, Devil May Cry, Burnout and in development The Getaway. Grand Theft Auto 3 and GTA: VC are currently dominating the charts so they need no introduction.
Nintendo is still trying to be the best by bringing out the GameCube. Whilst most games have yet to have an impact, the likes of resident evil and Super Mario Sunshine are definite hits.
Microsoft have decided to join in on the next gen console race by producing the Xbox. Another which has not really took off as well as the playstaion, Halo and project gotham racing are some early signs of promise.

Well that’s it. Most of the best games out there and were once out there have been stated. If game designers are making a game how can they not create a good one with so much past influence?
The ingredients are in the bowl, someone needs to put in a spoon and mix.
Why are some games bad? They no what people like, so why not give it to them? A couple of years ago, if a friend recommended a skateboarding game then you’d probably laugh at them, but after you played tony hawks you would think that they are an all right gaming series. If you have a new idea and produce a game that not allot of people like then make it good enough with the new technology

Actually the most successful character in video game history is Pacman, not Mario :-)
