There's a pretty well known saying: "things can only get better". When you look at modern life and past life you can understand how this is partly true. There are hundreds of things you can pick out from modern life and improve. People still fight in meaningless wars, the world is full of poverty and cruelty, evil dictators bully people and send out propaganda and hate crimes are commited against people of different religions, beliefs etc.
On opposite note, things have improved greatly since the olden days. Most people live in healthy lifestyles and technology makes things far easier and safer for mankind. For instance, everyday medical machines save hundreds of lives everyday. Oh dear! I seem to have drifted somewhat off the point, haven't I?
The point is coming I promise... Well... on the "things can only get better" point I would like to say that it is almost the same answer as in real life. Games are improving and quite rapidly at it, I'll say. Graphics, story ( in general) and gameplay are just some of the many things that improve everyday ( and realism)
Look at it another way... You'll soon see that things will just go on for infinity which is impossible! If graphics improve everyday a liitle bit then there will come a point when they simply cann't get better ( the graphics that is) By that stage of course playing a game could be like walking into a holodeck ( watch Star Trek?) and simply moving around in a virtual environment ( hopefully there'll be a pain factor in it! *laughs megalomaniacally* I feel nothing!) Maybe... Just maybe... graphics will develop backwards and in fifty years we'll be playing the 'square' style graphiics games where the hero looks like he stuck his head through the mailbox. In one hundred years we could expect the 'text' games ( some of those were pretty good, try the game version of The Hitchhikers Guide to The Galaxy. Bloody hard!) of what? twenty years ago... The same goes for gameplay and realism. Perhaps in ten years we'll be back to the disappearing body effect in games when you kill someone.
Well, if you asked me what I saw in the future of gaming I would reply with " I don't know..." Please reply. I would like to hear your thoughts. Remember the fact that VR is probably just around the corner.

As you say, in terms of graphics, games are improving every year. 10 years ago, when the SNES & Megadrive were battling it out, if you were to go back then and show gamers what we are playing now they would be shocked. It's hard to believe how amazing the graphics have become in such a relatively short space of time.
In another 10 years, in game graphics might look like the Final Fantasy movie...
Vast and amazing gaming worlds populated by thousands of online adventurers will also be more commonplace i'd bet, as well as FIFA 2012.
