And now, this is a tribute to gaming's finest people, men who have truly inspired the industry, and created the best games ever. If it wasn't for these guys, we'd still be wandering around in Space Invader clones and Pong updates.
These are the greatest of the great, the truly magnificent people who have inspired many genres new, and are us gamers' real heroes. We all owe it to them, the masterminds behind our screens, and we can't thank them enough.
To start with, we have Hideo Kojima. The man who inspired a legend, and now the best selling game in the world, even outstripping the likes of Final Fantasy X. Kojima san, we salute you. From the bedrooms of pre-teens, to the flickering old screens of the aged, millions have marvelled at your creations. A masterpiece at its finest, Solid Snake owes it to you, and so do all of us...
And to the man who put real meaning into driving emotion, Kazunori Yamauchi, one of the best games of the world is thanks to you. Gran Turismo is one of the finest games around, and it is thanks to you, your dream, our reality. Truly gargantuous in its prospects, ability and reality, you are the man behind the great game. Only an IQ of hundreds can result in this...
And a man from the west, who not only created one of the best PC games ever, but who is now a leading figurehead in today's gaming. Black and White; Artificial Intelligence taken to a new level, and great in every sense. Brilliance, Sheer Brilliance...
And another gaming great from our shores, Warren Spector also deserves mention. From Deus Ex, to Anachronox, he has redefined the Role-playing genre. No longer would he stand for pre-defined gameplay, he gave the gamesplayer what they wanted - a choice. From his 'paper' RPG times at Steve Jackson Games, to e-RPG stints at Origin Systems, he has a massive knowledge of the role-play, and it shows. The game of his dreams? That would be Deus Ex. And its the game of our dreams, too.
But if you really want aptitude in the role-playing business, you need look no further than Squaresoft's own, Hironobu Sakaguchi. Depressed at making mediocre games, and deciding it would be his final fantasy, Sakaguchi san made his last game, Final Fantasy. If he had decided not to, we wouldn't be looking at the massive franchise we have today, but would be restricted to our Grandia's, Dark Clouds and Ephemeral Fantasias. One of the most adept and imaginative people in the world of gaming, I cannot thank him enough for what he has done for my gaming experiences, and those of countless millions around the globe.
And possibly the greatest mind in gaming, Shigeru Miyamoto is the man I look up to. Responsible for hundreds of hours of my time, his works of art are the best you will ever find anywhere. He is responsible for Mario, Pikmin, and all manner of classic games from the NES to the GameCube, to the GBA.
And if you'll notice, in every case, the creators don't have massive budgets. They don't have special resources, and the only truly great item they have at their disposal is their own intellect. Truly great games have come from these fellows.
But if you aren't hyper-knowledgeable in the world of gaming, it may be of interest for you to know that none of these men have been creating games for more than about 15 years. So what about the other fifteen years? Surely there were many a classic game back then. Unfortunately, I wasn't around to see what were probably the best games, the golden era for gamers. But the one man who gaming leant on the most, was Nolan Bushnell. The inventor of Pong, and the pioneer of gaming, he IS responsible for where we are today. If he hadn't created that first game, who knows where we would be today. Keep it in mind.
Yes, these are the true greats of gaming. Every classic, whether deserved or by fluke, has got one man, one person with such great leadership qualities that they manage to hold together these massive teams of programmers. The outcome depends on everybody, but without the flagstone, it will all fall apart.
To the gods behind our gaming, from beloved Mario to brilliant Snake, I salute you all. You truly are, the greatest of the great, and we all owe our greatest gaming joys to you, and people like you. Thank you doesn't even scratch the surface...
