After seeing your site Turbonutter I was quite ahppy to find I own quite a few of your favourite programs including the GIMP (always thought that name was dodgy).
Right now I am downloading 1st Page (I think it is) as I was impressed with your site so i thought I'd give it a try.
Now, in your Linux section I saw the pictures and thought - "Wow that looks snazzy" and you kept going on about how great it is. So I would like to try it.
I went on the publishers site to see what it was all about but thought I would ask you about Linux compared to Windows and why it is better.
This topic also ties in with my crashing problem (which may be resolved thanks to some of you) as my OS may be the problem.
I was asking about Linxu today and I heard it was very limited on the number of programs you can use etc. So I was wondering if all windows programs will run on Linux.
So, what are the pros and the cons of Linux?
Honesty please and how can I get my hands on it?
Thanks,
MWA
Cool to see you're interested.
I could give a blow-by-blow list of why it's apparantly better than Windows or MacOS or whatever, but I won't. Lots of people have done that better than me.
Best thing you can do is to give it a go for yourself. Don't be afraid to break things. There's a great community out there to help you through your first install.
However.. don't go into it assuming it's going to be fun -- it's a fairly steep learning curve. At least at this state in the desktop domination game a general rule of thumb (which I just made up) is "if you're not comfortable using regedit.exe you probably wouldn't feel comfortable using any given flavour of Linux". But go for it.
Now that I've scared you off completely, choose your end of the pool. What you know as Linux comes in distibutions, different packages of similar software made by different companies or organisations.
Shallow end: Mandrake. It'll hold your hand through the install process. Nothing wrong with that. You'll have fun. Go buy a Mandrake boxed set or download and burn an ISO (if you've got broadband + a cd writer.)
Somewhere in the middle: Redhat / SuSE etc. Deployed widely as server systems but also perfectly viable as a desktop. Jump in if you want, the system will definiately feel different. This is where I started (albiet about four years ago, when everything was a lot more complicated. SuSE 5.4. Aah, memories. Of Pain. Yeah.)
Deep end: Debian. http://debian.org/ Hehe. Debian is amazingly cool but really scary. Rob and I use and love this. Or even OpenBSD or something, but that isn't technically Linux.
Entirely beyond the swimming pool metaphor and not even technically plausible without a bootstrap system: Linux From Scratch. Nah, don't worry about it. I'm rambling..
Hope I've given you some pointers.
Go check out Mandrake 8.1 or something at http://mandrakesoft.com/. http://linux.com/ is also a great site, but not distribution-specific.
G'luck.

FOOTNOTE (BY ME)

Mandrake is horrible. Steer well clear. I'd recommend RedHat or SuSE. Debian is fantastic, but it's very hard to get working properly unless you have someone, ahem, very patient who's willing to offer you loads of help. Cough.
Yes, Linux iss extremely snazzy. It beats Windows (and maybe MacOSX..?) in looks. My theme changes all the time, but this one seems to have lasted at least 3 weeks so I might stick with it. I'm not sure about the theme though....
Anyway...
The software range on Linux is huge, and most of it is good quality. However, you need to get used to the fact that it's NOT Microsoft. Sure, there are a few clones but it's different because the developers want it to be. You *can* run Windows software with WINE, but sometimes it doesn't work and it's always abit slow. However, I happen to know Word 2000 is very usable. You can also use VMware if you have a Windows drive to hand.
I would never recommend just having Linux. Windows is the best selling OS and some very good software is made for it. However, I can very hapilly spend 99% of my time and only dip into the Microsoft hell once in a while.
Can anyone give me the url of Rob's webby?
Oh and www.andi.tk is far better than robs site :p
Run.
Before Luke and Rob catch you. They will literally bore you to death.
