With the ammount of attention these guys have been recieving since Microsoft's interest in them had become apparent you'd probably think they were some kind-of new team looking to enter a new console into the next war or something, if you didn't already know who they were or anything. Well, that's the way I see it. But they are ONLY a team of developers who helped sell the N64 and SNES, and nothing more. Although Microsoft hope they can do the same with their X-Box.
That may be where they are at now, but who can tell where they'll be in the future.
Perhaps in only another 5 years time we could finally see a new home for the likes of Banjo the Bear and Conker the Squirrel in the form of a home console to rival that of SONY's PS3, the X-Box 2 and Nintendo's succesor to the GameCube.
Who's to say it wouldn't work-out for Rare if they entered the console wars??
It's not like they could do a job as-bad-as SEGA did with their Saturn now is it?
And when you think carefully about it, I see them as possibly... "The Next Nintendo".
Not just because they worked closely with the likes of Miyamoto on fomer Nintendo consoles, aswell-as StarFox Adventures on the GameCube, but I get this feeling mainly from looking at the ideas in their games.
When you look at the games they've produced like the 2 Banjo games and Donkey Kong on the N64, aswell as the 3 DK Country titles, you see one thing in them all, and that is "Mario". They may not be as-great-as Mario World, Mario 64, or even Mario SunShine, but all the elements are there. They're fun to play, enjoyable, can be enjoyed by anyone at any age, and they offer you a reasonable challenge along-the-way while not making it too-hard. Sounds just like a Mario game, but without Mario and co., doesn't it?
And then there's StarFox Adventures, Rareware's last-game for a Nintendo home console.
When we first saw this part-RPG-Adventure title we all said to ourselves "This looks just like Zelda, but with animals and dinosaurs.. Cool!". But recent reviews have lead-us to believe that it may not be quite as-great-as we were expecting. Despite all that, you can see simillarities within the work from Rare here that makes this so Zelda-like. You could even say it has come straight from Nintendo themselves!
So I think it would be safe-to-say that a home console from Rare would be able to do just as-well-as Nintendo have done with their efforts, if not better. And all thanks to the first party support from Rare themselves. Without the help of Capcom and Activision and co., which would soon be required to help boost-sales anyway.
But if they weren't to go into the console business, then where-else could they go.
To be honest, there is no-other option really than to stay with Microsoft, or whoever-else they may be working with side-by-side when the time comes for a change.
I suppose they could look towards providing us with a new handheld console though, the GameBoy Advance is still stuck looking for any real competition over here in Europe, and I'm sure something from 'The Other Nintendo' would be able to give us gamers a real descision on our hands.
The way it's going now, it seems that Rare will always be stuck supporting major companies (one-at-a-time) with their own individual and unique brilliant ideas they inject into their games that make them so great and memorable to play.
But the door will always be open to them - or any other company - should they feel the need to move-on and send their own entry into the console wars.
Just imagine how great a Rare console would be...
Nothing but Conker, Jo Dark, Banjo, and Kazooie to keep you company untill all the others arrive.
Hopefully though, Rare will never die!
They're a software company, and with all the investment MS/Nintendo have put in them, they've had pretty much all the advantages of having their own console without having to do all the big expensive risky stuff like hardware devellopment, promotion, selling it... etc...
