In essence, it was news that will have sent shockwaves throughout the Industry and surely felt at Sony HQ in Japan with grief.
Alas, Final Fantasy is no longer PS2 exclusive.
I can honestly say that I never expected to see Squaresoft games EVER on a Nintendo console, the news struck me in total disbelief at first, for a second after reading the announcement I checked my watch to see the date (I can be forgetful at times), thinking that it was April 1st and this was some sort of April Fools day joke. But it wasn't, the 8th it read in black digital letters, within minutes the story was all over the internet-It was true. Final Fantasy is on it's way to Gamecube.
After the News finally sunk in, I started to wonder how this all fits in with Sony's 19% stake in Square, at-least how on Earth did Nintendo manage it?
But manage it they did! With style! Yamauchi President of Nintendo, Funded a Development core that would create games for Nintendo Systems, one of the latching Developers happened to be Square-Bringing along their hottest franchise along with them.
Japan of course, will appreciate this move more so than us Europeans. Final Fantasy is hugely popular with the Japanese public, a smart move by Nintendo I'd say to improve Gamecube sales to heights unimaginable.
But surely it will be the X-Box, not the PS2 that will suffer in Japan because of this. As it stands at the moment, the X-Box isn't going down terribly well in Japan, with poor sales and popularity. Not to mention the disaster with the recalling of every Japanese X-Box console in the country, harming the image and reputation of the console even further.
The reality is, with poor game sales of the X-Box in Japan, the X-box has nothing appealing for it anymore compared to Sony and Nintendo, but with Microsoft's huge pockets though, the system should survive that little bit longer.
But where does this announcement leave Sony now? After all as I've stated, they have lost the Final Fantasy franchise as a PS2 exclusive, without MGS2- would there be a reason to buy a PS2??
And if yes, why?
Gamecube after all will have Resident Evil as an exclusive with 6 titles in that range. It'll have many of Nintendo's AAA greats which are exclusive content too, it will have many of the PS2 releases in better form with superior visuals utilising the Gamecubes superiority.
Nintendo, in my view have never had it better. The tie up with Square will reap rewards for the foreseeable future. And there is no need to panic either about Squaresoft's reliance on huge storage for games. Gamecubes 1.6 Gb Optical discs is ample room for Squaresoft creativity, storage may be a problem with one disc, but it never stopped Square before when they needed extra storage for the FF titles for the PS, using 4 CD's in total- 700 Mb per Disc. That's why Gamecubes 1.6 Gb per disc is enough for Square's liking.
Nintendo are in a very strong position in the console world, there is really no budging them now.
And after all the backlash and criticism- the man to thank for this latest development is Mr.Yamauchi- He was called everything in the past year from a demon to a mouth piece.
In my eyes the man is a total genius.
Because of Yamauchi, I will look forward to playing Final Fantasy this Christmas on my Gamecube. And so will many others.
Final Fantasy on Cube with GBA link up. This will probably be the final fantasy unlimited series.
Then there will be 2 other GBA Games. Final Fantasy Tactics and a yet unannounced game.
This is their vision of online gaming...
Players would not be divided by what console they had and that online games would break the boundary of "my console is better than yours"... The aim is to create community...
So it makes sense... FFXI on PS2, GCN and XBOX(eventually)
This is such old news!! DOesn't anyone ever keep up with whats going on "PlayOnline Japan"?
Sony bought out Square's US studios, so now own even more than that- over 40% if I remember correctly!
sonic
The X-Box seems to be a very unatractive buy to the Japanese public. Square will think that way too, after the events of the Japanese X-box in the past week.
As For the Gamecube i predict Final Fantasy XI, Nintendo have been holding online plans back for some reason especially as PSOv2 is ready, it is simply because they need to guarentee online success and FFXI is likely to be more successful than PSOv2.
The reason for that prediction had something to do with Squaresoft saying that they want FFXI on all consoles which means... the X-box too?????
A new and GC exclusive would DEFINITLEY boost the sales!!
But maybe not so if it's FF XII, as many PS2 owners could easily just buy the game.
