Idol - image as object of worship; object of devotion
Definitely true. People will worship them in a way. They will be devoted to them. And in my opinion they are little more than images.
OK, fair enough, they can sing and can look nice on stage, but that’s all I’m gonna give them for now. Over the last few months, their names and faces have been forced – yes FORCED – into our perception. I mean I’ve tried, tried so very hard to ignore them, to deny even their existence. But everywhere I look they’re there. On TV, on the radio, in magazines, on billboards…the list goes on. I can’t ignore them. THEY’RE EVERYWHERE!
For now at least, nothing can stop them. So why don’t I just go with the flow? “If you can’t beat them, join them” sort of thing. I’ll tell you why. They are JUST idols. Images. Nothing more. I happened to be channel surfing yesterday and I accidentally caught a performance of Will’s (yes I even know his name…) release. I sat all the way through it (may I be forgiven…) but what did it give me? Absolutely nothing!
The song itself was OK, but it was old. I’d heard it before. There was nothing new there. And the actual performance? I felt nothing. Nothing at all.
There was no physical response - My heart didn’t start racing. I didn’t nod my head or tap my foot. I didn’t even smile.
It didn’t make me think – There was no part of the song, whether chord progression or vocal harmony, that made me think “Yes – that was good”.
But scariest of all, I didn’t even get a feeling of revulsion. I sat there, and absolutely nothing happened. My life was just a little bit shorter.
I finally understand that car advert that says “Its better to provoke a response than none at all…”
So why is it so popular? How can a simple image provoke such a large response?
Well if you take all the airtime that Pop Idol got and you split it up into 30-second commercials, it works out that the winner would have thousands if not millions of pounds of advertising behind him. Even if you assume that only a small proportion of all advertising is effective, they’re still gonna get through to loads of people, just because of the sheer volume of it all.
All the hype. All the excitement. They couldn’t do badly if they tried.
But what will the future hold for our newest idols? Probably a string of songs that allow them to stand in the middle of stage, tapping a foot, and showing everyone that they can sing. I hope this won’t be the case, I truly do. Even songs that I could definitely hate would be better. Just no the nothing I’ve seen so far please.
The second out of the Ten Commandments says not to worship Idols. Maybe some of you will find new meaning in this now. I know the Pop idols will give me nothing. Nothing at all.
But more stable.
I don't want bland singers.
Bill Hicks:
"I want my children to listen to people that ROCKED. I don't care if they died in puddles of vomit, PLAY FROM YOUR F---ING HEART! Mummy, the man Bill told me to listen to has a blood bubble on his nose..SHUT UP AND LISTEN TO HIM PLAY..oh there such good role models, they're so clean cut...f--- that, when did mediocrity and banality become a good role model for your children? You'll end up with an entire world of albino zombies that never step outside malls and have no idea what music used to be like."
Homogenised, tasteless, non-offensive singers for everybody!
*backs away quietly*
