In August 1999 I bought a game for my PlayStation. I was excited of course, you always are when you’ve got something new to play, but I wasn’t to know how much pleasure this game would give me over the next couple of weeks.
It was called Metal Gear Solid. I’d heard good reviews, some even saying it was the best ever, and so decided I couldn’t miss out. At first it was tough, I couldn’t even get past the first mission. I wasn’t used to the stealth approach, and I couldn’t get the hang of it. Why not just go around shooting everyone? However, something I’ve learned by playing games is to never give up (check the dents on my desk for confirmation). I didn’t give up, and finally I got through the first couple of missions. This game was different in someway…lots of FMV scenes, much character interaction, the Codec as well as many other strange gadgets and weapons. A lot of the discussion appeared to go over my head-talk of nuclear threats, government conspiracies etc. However I played as I was told, sneaking underneath security cameras, taking out guards quietly and talking on my Codec the whole way through.

As I continued on I came across people such as the DARPA Chief, as well as bosses like Revolver Ocelot, and the plot finally began to take shape. Taking on the bosses was exciting, and just the normal gameplay of crawling past guards was possibly the most atmospheric gaming experience I’ve ever had. I got further into the game and became more enticed, the wonderful music added great effect and the plot twisted and turned. Enemies became harder, yet more satisfying when defeated. I had never played a game like this before, it was truly amazing. I couldn’t get enough and finally completed it after a roller-coaster ride throughout the ‘game’, and I literally sat and stared at the screen for a few minutes, trying to get over how good Metal Gear Solid was.

Considering I had actually got the around a year after it was released in Europe I thought their may be news on a sequel. I was searching straight away, and yes, I found confirmation from the creator of the masterpiece Hideo Kojima that there would be another MGS, on the PS2. Although it was a long way away I was satisfied, and I kept up-to-date with the news as the years went by. A couple of months ago the release date was confirmed for March, and a few months before I had played the demo. I became excited, knowing my favourite game had now been improved, at least graphically and gameplay-wise.

And now today, I hold a package in my hand (cheers SR). A mere package, yet, it means so much to me. Inside lays a receipt, a magazine, but most importantly, Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons Of Liberty. Fans like myself have hailed it the best ever, others have not been so impressed. However, I know that not everyone likes the same genre, and that means that not everyone will like MGS2.

How can a package mean so much! How can a game mean so much? I have waited over two years for this moment, and now it has come. No, MGS2 won’t change my life. No, it won’t make me any smarter, and no, it won’t make me any more popular (unless I somehow become the only person in Britain with a copy). But, I know it will give me an amazing experience. Will the storyline and characters be so impressive as the prequel? I don’t know, there are still questions to be answered. Maybe I will be disappointed, but I doubt it.

I have now played it for an hour or so, and beaten the first boss. She was extremely tough, but that might be because I’m playing it on one of the hardest levels. The voices are excellent, especially David Hayter as Solid Snake. The graphics, as expected, are brilliant, and there are so many gameplay options it’s hard to believe. There’s also the added element of comedy, with Otacon’s philosophical quotes (they came from Mei Ling in MGS, not sure if she makes an appearance). So far I am impressed, it didn’t frustrate me and I had to force myself to stop playing. I can’t wait to play the rest.

Is Metal Gear Solid 2 the best game ever? As of yet, I don’t know. But judging by what I’ve played so far, it’s certainly worthy of that title. Bring on more tactical espionage action!

Thanks for reading, Ant.

PS- We've sorted out the Freeserve problem, I should be back online normally within the next couple of days.

You're not the only one who has experienced joy at getting Metal Gear Solid 2 this morning. Many people on SR picked up their packages and gazed in awe as they played the game on their PS2.

If only I'd been one of those people.....

Brilliant post too!
