I've just learned that Capcom have confirmed a port of the popular Capcom vs SNK 2 to the Gamecube. Whilst this is good news for fight fans (myself included). I can't help feel that this type of game is the Gamecube's achillies heel.

Yes, it fits into the palm of your hand effortlessly, but the D-Pad is far too stiff and poorly placed for titles within this genre, not to mention the irregular size of the face buttons.

There are many genre's the Gamecube control-pad will work seamlessly in, but beat-em-up's won't be one of them I don't think.

Although, rumours are abound that an ASCII control-stick is in development to combat this "problem".

We'll soon see I guess.

Yea, all true but Beat 'Em up's weren't exactly huge on Nintendo were they? Snes had some, N64 had like 1, GC has.. 1-2.. I dont really like them, they are only good for a bit of a fun game with mates.

I agree, although the D-pad has improved for the Gamecube the positioning is poor. I aint got a sodding clue what it is going to be used for in that position. Did Ninty just set it up like that so it woudnt look as though they are copying Sony with the dual analogue?...I wonder...

The N64 had the same problem with its beat em ups. The D-pad just didn't "feel" right as it was quite stiff and slightly unresponsive. I had Killer Instinct and Mace on the N64, but they never played as well as Playstation fighting games. The analogue stick on the N64 wasn't too great for fighting games either, and it was a genre that never really took off on the system.
