Now I really want to play on Battlefield 1942, partially because I'm getting broadband internet soon, but it won't work on my PC. It always crashes as it loads a level. I meet the minimum specs but it still wont work. I'm going to boost my PC's power this christmas but I don't know what I should get?

Should I boost my RAM up to 256MB

or

Should I upgrade my graphics card from a 32MB nVidia GeForce 2 to a 64MB nVidia GeForce 4.

Personally I think the RAM would help more but could anyone give me a bit more advice? Please.....

If your system already has the minimum amount of RAM required to play the game then I think you should get the new graphics card first and install additional RAM later. The problems with the game may not be related to hardware but could well be something to do with Windows. Make sure you're using the latest soundcard and graphics card drivers (nVidia's official drivers from nvidia.com are really good) available for your hardware. Also, in Windows try to free some system memory by closing background programs - in Windows 9x hit Ctrl+Alt+Delete and close programs you don't need to be running when you're gaming (such as software which handles additional buttons on your keyboard or mouse, anti-virus software, newsticker programs and other Windows add-ons). In Windows 2000/XP press Ctrl+Shift+Escape and do the same thing.

In Windows 9x and Windows XP you can also disable some unnecessary programs that automatically start up with Windows such as Windows Messenger or other instant messenger programs like Yahoo! Messenger, AOL Instant Messenger, etc, by going to the Start Menu, selecting Run and using 'msconfig'.
In Windows 2000/XP try disabling system services you don't need in Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Services. Services you don't *need* include Windows Automatic Update. There are also websites that offer information on which services you can safely disable in Windows 2000 and Windows XP to help free memory and speed up your computer for gaming (try an Internet search). Windows, quite often by default, is not fine-tuned for gaming and it's up to you to change what Windows runs in order to get the best performance from your computer.

Good Luck!

Try re-installing Direct X (8.0 or 8.1) whichever youre using) and also update your video card drivers. Also make sure that any anti-virus software that is running in the background is turned off as this can (and often does) crash some games back to the desktop.

I'll try that when I get it again just after Christmas when I've got my brand new graphics card. I sent it back to SR out of sheer anger, back in October when I got it.

Try turning the sound quality down. My game crashed when i tried loading Multi-player. I turned the sound down and haven't had a problem since.

I don't get any error messages. It just crashes and goes back to Windows as if nothing has happened. So up grading my graphics card is more likely to solve this problem than upgrading the RAM. I've got Morrowind and that has the same specs. and it works fine (apart from really irritating loading times). Aaaaah. When I looked in the readme file of BF1942 it said that I may experience problems with my GeForce 2. That'll be it then! Cheers!

I agree with DW but Graphics Card and Memory may not solve your problem, sounds like something else could be up ??? Do you not get any error messages ?
As with all games you should close as many background running programs as possible before loading.

Upgrade the graphics card, and then gradually increase your memory. Sticks of RAM go for £30 these days.
