Now, I don't actually hear much about these things in any forum on the site. Perhaps it's because they just ain't popular enough, or just perhaps no-one takes a keen interest because of the lack of games ect. Either way, the new iMac has looks to die for and specs to match.
Anyone here actually a Mac fan or going to be getting one of these?
You can always get Virtual PC for them which allow you to use MSN ect., and it's only £50.
anyway, doesn't matter about games, you've already got a good enough pc for them, get a Mac, your going into web design so it might be a good step, I know I kinda put you off before, but they're not bad.
Sad thing is, it's a completly different way of thinking, it's hard to close programs down if you've never been told/done it before, but they're faster, and look prettier, 2 good reason, bad reason are, you need all new software, it's harder to get *cough*ware for it methinks, so your bank balance would be ever so slightly slimmer, all things like MSN Messenger would be out the window, and other MSN utilites :( also, you could spend the same money on a PC with WinXP 2Ghz AMD cpu...yadda yadda, and it would no doubt do the same thing, and you'll be able to upgrade it yourself later on.
also, thing about software having to be different, yhou can't go online and say.."hey, have this piece of thing" (unless it's a picture file: .jpg/.gif) they won't be able to open it unless they have a Mac, most of the file names are completly different.
don't think they have .exe .bats n stuff.
completly different way of thinking.......
I regularly wander round our local PC World, for reasons beyond my control. I *always* check out the new Macs they hae there. They just get sexier every week!
But back to OSX: It's just too damn nice. I mean, it's *REALLY* nice. Extrordinarily nice. It's by a long shot the best looking OS ever created. In fact, I would go as far to say that visually it can be summed up in one word: Perfect. The brilliant blue buttons, the aura they project, the shadow on the windows, the smooth way the menus slide in an out, the way the icons enlarge in the taskbar... It's stunning. In fact, I might just turn my OSX theme back on here for the thrill.
However, it's also one of the slowest. Their 500mhz iMac, with a far superior architecture, runs about the same speed as this 333mhz with Linux and GNOME 1.4. That makes it easily slower than Windows. Well, all the immense visual loveliness must come at a price. Also, the software is limited. Sure, there's Internet Exploder, the Office 2000 suite and Macromedia stuff, but other than that you can't find many ports, except for big name software (and games).
Actually, I'd love to have one (a MacG4, not an iMac), or an iBook, but I can't afford it. I'd only run Macromedia and office on them anyway. It'd save having to boot Windows on Euripides or Aeschylus to use them.
